CSE, CS, or Math Track

Hi I'm freshman in UIUC engineering. I will be studying CS and I am not sure about what track I will take.

There are three options, CSE, CS, and Math track.

I want to get some advice on which track I should choose.

Really any information would help.

What aspects of computer science are you interested in?
I would guess CSE is more hardware/systems, math is probably very theoretical…but i’m not sure.

Looks like UIUC CS has officially supported degree programs in:

Computer Science
Math / Computer Science
Statistics / Computer Science

as well as tracks within the regular CS major:

Computer Science Track
Computational Science and Engineering Track
Math Track

It looks like the various tracks within the plain CS major differ in junior year and after, so you do not have to make a decision now (i.e. you can wait until you see which CS and Math courses are most interesting to you). If you want to consider the double majors, check to see if you need to do any extra planning in your first two years to keep those possibilities open.

Within the tracks, the Computer Science track appears to be the most general in terms of what one would expect a CS major to do; the Computational Science and Engineering track appears to be aimed at specializing in scientific applications, while the Math track appears to be aimed at theory.

thanks a lot! Helped me very much.

Being a freshman, I’m just worried about everything I guess.

Anyway thanks!
