So im taking cse 142 right now at UW.

I was wondering if anyone knows about what the average grade is in this class?

And, about how well you need to do on midterms, homework, and the final to get an average grade?

Lastly, I know cse 143 is a very important determinant for admission into the department, but how much does 142 matter?

Thanks

First, you’ll need above average to get into the CSE department. Here are the grades from my class last autumn:
[CSE 142, Autumn 2010](CSE 142, Autumn 2010)

Interested in CSE 143 grades? Winter 2011:
[CSE 143, Winter 2011](CSE 143, Winter 2011)

CSE 143 builds on 142, so even though (I think) the admissions department puts more weight on the 143 grade, you should do well in 142 to use those concepts in 143.

Also, from the CSE 142 syllabus from Autumn 2010:

This maps to the 4.0 scale roughly as follows. You will get at least the grade below for the percentage shown.
90%: at least 3.5
85%: at least 3.0
80%: at least 2.5
75%: at least 2.0
70%: at least 1.5
60%: at least 0.

Wow, there are a lot of 4.0s in that class…

Yeah I think our cut off for a 4.0 ended up being somewhere around 96.5%. Depending on t he professor, sometimes it’s ‘guaranteed’ that 98.5% is a 4.0, but we had a slight curve.
