CSE placement testing

There is a required placement test for calculus and chemistry for CSE. How hard are these tests, and what do they cover? Do they cover the actual subjects, or are they more of a test to see how prepared you are to take these classes?

I'm asking because I've taken both courses in high school and plan on using AP credit to test out of generals. I'm wondering if I need to refresh my knowledge or not before taking the placement tests (since I haven't done either calculus or chemistry in quite a while).

If someone that has already done placement testing for CSE this year has input, it would be very appreciated!

The placement test isn’t calculus, it’s just general math. It’s mostly algebra. And the chemistry exam isn’t too challenging, it’s just the basics mostly. At Barnes and Noble, they have those laminated cards with different subjects on it, so pick one up for review. There are several examples available on the internet of previous questions. Look those up too. Good luck!

If I am taking AP Chem and Calc, should I be okay for the placement exams?

I just took the Calculus Placement test and I got a 24 out of 30. It wasn’t too bad, a little trig but mostly algebra.

@gman333 Are you CSE? Thanks for posting!

Yes, I am. Thanks, I thought I would post since I couldn’t find much info.

How many questions were on theccalculus placement exam?

Calc was 30 questions. Chemistry was 40. Calc was pre-calc stuff (no actual calculus). You can actually do the four practice questions before taking the actual placement test!

How important are placement exams in class placement. For someone who took AP Calculus BC, and wants to be placed in Calculus II, is a 26/30 ok? What seems to be the average score on this exam for most people?

Thanks

I’m sure that’s a good enough score! My adviser only used my AP scores for placement and did not even mention tests (aka what a waste of stress/time).

How was the CSE orientation? About how many people were there on orientation day? Also, if you don’t mind me asking, what did you get on the placement exams?

I got a 5 on both AP tests and only lost one or two points on each placement test. Orientation was pretty repetitive (it’s a lot of facts that you see on the website). If you can find a friend in your orientation group right away it’s a lot more enjoyable. Definitely research classes beforehand because you don’t get much time with an adviser unless you are honors. I’m not sure how many people were there but my group was about 26 CSE kids. I think there are usually a few CSE groups that vary in size. Food was a lot better than I expected though. Definitely bring an extra blanket though, since it gets pretty cold at night and the one they give you is pretty thin.

Thanks
