So I will apply for UW CSE in Spring? Can any of u guys who have been accepted by UWCSE share your stats? What will they look at when they view my application? I haven't taken SAT b/s international students dont need SAT. If I take SAT Math subject test? will it increase my chance?

nhhn018: I was looking at your other posts via your profile and if I have it right, you’ll be transferring in the Fall? Just want to make sure I don’t give you wrong info :P

I’m also applying for the CSE dept. in the spring. So anyone who got in…please share your stats!!

-Personal Statement

They look at your CSE 142, 143 (intro courses) grades as well as the prereqs, such as calculus or physics class grades.

They also take a good careful look at personal statements… Do not BS these. See below link for more info.

Unless you are applying for direct admit (basically part of your admissions application to UW in general), you don’t have to submit SAT scores.

Since you guys are interested in the major, I would suggest that you contact one of the advisors early on, even now, to make sure you’re on track and you can ask them questions about the admissions process.

I was a direct admit student, so my stats are … basically high school directly into university stats. I think they’re not applicable to your application process. However, most CSE majors have between a 3.6 and a 4.0 in both CSE 142 and 143, and a 3.6 is kind of pushing it. Most people who get into the major right away get a 3.9 or 4.0 in the classes.

hi speedsolver, thanks a lot for the fast response

I will take CSE143 and M126 in Fall n apply to UW CSE in Spring. So basically I am a pre major in Computer Science.

I gt 4.0 for CSE142, 4.0 for Cal I, 3.8 for Cal II. But I f**** up my Phy121 which is one of the repreq. I only gt 3.2 for Phy121. I will make sure to write a good personal statement. But how high is the chance that I will get accepted. . .

Mm… I think you’re still okay right now. It looks like your CSE and Math is going very strong, and keep that up! =)

Try to hit a 3.9 or 4.0 in CSE 143 - the top 10% of the class will be invited to apply for the department through the accelerated admissions.

As long as you have a good personal statement, I wouldn’t worry too much. Do you plan on taking Physics 122? I know some people who got 2.Xs on phys 121 but in 122 and 123, increased their GPA in the physics series until a 3.9 or so; they got in over the summer.

speedsolver - Does the physics grade really play a big role determining whether one gets into the department or not? I did horrible in physics T.T

yup alice is right. I know physics is an important science subject but why its matter too much for a computer scientist?

lol speedsolver, I think ure right. I am worry too much I’ll just focus on my Cal III and CSE143 than

looks like the 3 of us are in the same major. I am excited too know u guys

aliceeeee: I think it’s important enough that if you got below average, (2.6, maybe?) it’s not a very good sign… you can explain yourself in your essay, show an upward grade trend, and it won’t be as big of an issue. Since admissions is really competitive, it’s more of a … “tie breaker”, if you will, if two people are neck to neck, there’s 1 spot left, they’ll probably take a closer look at GPA and course choices.

nhhn018: If you’re really worried, go talk to an advisor! In the mean time, concentrate on Calc 3 and CSE 143 for fall. If the advisor says that your physics grade is so much of a problem, consider either retaking it in the winter, or taking 122 and destroying the curve in that one to ‘prove yourself’. =P Not an uncommon track for some current CS majors, actually.

Yes, I’m excited to know you guys =) I’m glad to hear a lot of people planning on pursuing a CS degree on CC XD

speedsolver - Thank you so much for all your input! It’s great to hear from someone already in the department! I didn’t do well in physics but I think I’m okay with my calculus grades…-sigh- I’m sooo gonna work my butt off for CSE 142 and 143. =_____=

Lol looking forward to knowing more about you guys aswell Computer science ftw!!

aliceeeee: Remember to never be shy to ask for help =] I pelted my TAs with questions, trying to understand concepts outside of class and they were very helpful! They also try their best to answer right away so you don’t get too stuck on homework and such.

The exams are tricky - I have a compiled zip file of 142 and 143 past exams as of the previous quarter that I update and send off to people I know who want them all (instead of scrounging for past exams from each quarter’s own webpage (tey have a ‘past exams’ section, but they don’t always have all the previous exams… the more practice, the better. If you guys want that, just PM me.
