I thought I would post this up as my daughter and I are headed to Golden to attend this event. We are Out of State, so curious what other OOS families might be attending as well as anyone whose Son/Daughter is considering Mines for fall of 2022.
My D24 is interested in CSM, would you mind giving your impressions of the school after you visit?
Yes, I would be glad to. If you don’t hear from me by the end of next week, please send me a reminder. Thanks
We visited last month and were really impressed. It is up there on my D22s list; she is admitted but not yet committed. Enjoy the trip!
Son was admitted for Fall 2022 into Comp Sci. We are visiting Mines March 17, I did not see the ‘Explore Mines Day March 12th’ event. Will you please post the link ?
We went two years ago - and then skiing.
Great day - apparently the food on that day is swapped out - i.e. it’s good but not normally so.
Neat campus, good day overall. The student panel was helpful other than my son didn’t listen - they said (the students) if you have AP credit for a math/science (i.e. an engineering focused class), take it again - do not take the AP credit.
My son didn’t listen - had to drop and repeat Calc 2 his very first semester (at Alabama, didn’t choose Mines).
Fine day though - was well done I remember. pre-covid.
Sorry, I am not able to post a link. Both my Daughter and I received an e-mail from Mines on February 4th regarding the event. They are offering a virtual version on April 9th. If you can not find it on the accepted student event page, I would call admissions.
We visited in late February, on a bitterly cold afternoon, after a fresh coat of snow had fallen. It is a most gorgeous setting. We happened to meet the President of CSM on our tour. He is a very friendly and down to earth person.
Compared to other schools we have visited, such as Iowa State, UIUC, Ohio State and Purdue, it is a small (but not tiny) school. The facilities are great and the program is rigorous. It definitely has an outdoorsy vibe, which S24, who was also on the trip, adored.
What major ? Did D / S get to meet any of the faculty besides the Prez and if so how was that ? We are headed to Golden + Boulder + Fort Collins next weekend. Appreciate any advice / must sees at Mines.
He was accepted into Data Science in CS. That doesn’t really matter as everyone takes the same classes for the first three terms and you have until your fourth semester to choose your major. This was a one-and-a-half hour admitted students session, so we didn’t get to meet anyone other than the admissions staff and a couple of students. Running into the president was happenstance.
I don’t know what would be open during the weekend. Perhaps you could call admissions and check. We drove by Golden and it seemed to be a quaint little town.
How was Explore Mines Day?
Well, I would love to tell you all about it, but our flight was canceled. In fact, we had two cancelations that week, one for weather and the other I have no idea why. Anyway, in our case, it might have been a blessing, as we have re-scheduled and during this time our daughter has connected with several Mines students learning a lot more along the way. At this point, she feels she understands clearly what each of her top schools offers in the way of Academics, Housing (Options for all 4 years), Extracurriculars (Sports, clubs) and the costs, etc. What she is trying to pin down is the student experience based on the make-up of the student population. She is gaining that thru conversations with some wonderful young ladies willing to share their experiences. So that is a shout out to those who have helped her.
Sorry to hear about your travel problems, but glad to hear it is working out for your daughter. Best of luck to her.
