After I submited the CSS, it displayed a list of codes for each college indicating what documentation is required. Most of the documents are not yet available (2010 W2s, etc.), but one document was a copy of any trust document. At this point it was too late to mail, so I sent an email explaining that it was a testamentary or pour-over trust funded with $50 - so I hope they will be okay with that. Especially since the FA officer did not tell me about it when we spoke. She also told me to submit my most recent pay-stub - and that was not on the CSS list, or anywhere on the colleges FA website.
This caught me off guard when I submitted the CSS for my D's ED app last night - figured I would wait to submit to see if she was really going to make the deadline.
Is there any place that would have shown this before submitting? I have been working on the CSS for over a month - and thought I had reviewed everything.

I havent filled out the PROFILE for a while, but generally the verification forms ( like signed 1040s) go right to each school . ( When you decide which offer to accept)

Everyone needs to read the fine print on the websites of each college for financial aid ASAP and keep careful track of them - particularly regarding deadlines.

About of the third of the colleges where my son is applying say they only want tax forms, etc. if you are one of the people chosen for an audit. Another third say they want the tax forms, etc. submitted in any case - sometimes by Feb. 1 (and before any acceptances are issued by the college). Some want them submitted by the College Board’s IDOC system (which is also referenced when you file the CSS profile for some colleges).

I hadn’t heard of the pay stub requirement, but it makes sense, particularly when they are trying to sort out deducations for retirement, etc.

Prior to submitting I did comb through the college FA site, though I may have assumed something did not apply to me.

My understanding is that supporting documentation gets sent to the colleges NOT to the College Board (the folks who administer the Profile). So any additional documentation would be sent directly to each school. You do need to check EACH website carefully for documentation they want.

Schools KNOW that your 2010 tax returns are not yet complete. Read carefully because when our kiddos applied EA, they requested the PREVIOUS year’s tax returns and then the current ones were sent in Feb when they were completed. Some schools wanted the W-2 forms, some didn’t. We also had to send in current paystubs to one school. The requirements vary wildly from school to school.

And to anyone else reading this thread…this just highlights another good reason for trying to complete these things at least a WEEK before the deadlines. That way if there are other things you need, you will have ample time to find them and send them.
