oh my gosh! the CSS was due FEb1 and so was the FAFSA...today is FEb 6 and i am not done with filling those out...took a long time for the W2 and I didnt even know what a CSS is!! Anywho, its my fault...but would it still be ok if i turned it in late? Will the admission people know that i turned it in late? oh gosh..the CSS requires a fee and I cant seem to find a way around it...i need to turn it in by paper because turning it in online would require a credit card [fee]. oh my gosh!!

Tomorrow morning, call the office of financial aid. Tell them your problem (calmly) and then see how they can help you. Nothing any of us can do.

They were due? My counselor told me the FAFSA wasn't due until February-Marchish...

My dad didn't even receive his W2 form from work until February 1st.

can't you just make estimates for the numbers on the forms if you don't know the actual ones?

Just send a note or call the fin aid office, somehow I don't think they will be that picky about the deadline, but contact them first to make sure.

Yeah, you can just make estimates for the FAFSA.. that's what I did, and you can always go back and make corrections later anyway.

but icymoon..will they think i am bad for being late on something like that?

It's the financial aid office that knows your stuff is late, so don't worry, it shouldn't have an impact on your admissions decision since the admissons office doesn't know that you turned it in late.

I don't think they'll think you're "bad" or anything.. I have a feeling that a lot of people turned it in late, and since financial aid is need-based, I don't think it matters what the financial aid office thinks of you, bad or good.

So don't worry! :D Just hurry up and finish it so you can submit it asap.

To make both of us feel better: under the admission status requirements table, there's the whole list of things needed and whether they've been received or not: SAT or ACT scores, application part 1, application part 2, etc. - but financial aid documents are nowhere in that list, meaning they don't need them to make a decision. So I doubt this is going to affect whether or not we're admitted or are able to find out about our decisions this week...but I suppose it does need to be in as soon as possible.

Where ae your parents in all of this...It seems to me that they should be responsible for the FASFA and CSS...I would call, most schools have a deadline but I'll bet a phone call would help. You might want to print and send directly since the traffic is heavy on both sites as many schools have different deadlines for the forms...

Most schools are need blind so it won't affect the decision just your wallet next year :-)

lol...just my small messed up wallet....as for the FASFA and CSS...i am really doing this whole college thingy on my own...i dont want to stress my mom out....she has way too and i mean WAY TOO much stuff to do...haha and they say college can be overwhelming....i am doing just find...its ok...when you think about it, this is not so bad...not so bad at all...hmm...

Hehe, juniormom, my parents could pretty much care less about the whole affair. My dad would be happy if I went to a junior college around here. But at least our taxes are now in to the accountant and he should be sending out the FAFSA to my top five schools, including Rice.

Are you sure you can do it on your own? I didn't have most of the figures and estimates needed for the FAFSA and CSS, so I showed my mom how to use the website/log-in, and she entered the parents' information in.

My mom is also really stressed out with a lot of things to do, but I guess she's willing to do the fafsa and css because if I accidentally enter in the wrong information, it'll be her wallet that gets affected next year. ;)

I sent in the CSS on time since I had it already filled out, but my FAFSA isn't done since my dad says he doesn't have the proper documents to complete it. The Feb 1 date is only priority. If you're late, you don't get less money or anything, you just get an aid estimate/offer later in the year.

Here is how it goes. Don't hold me accountable as a 100% accurate source, but I believe this is correct:

Feburary 1st was the PRIORITY filing deadline. By priority, I believe Rice means that you shall have your SAR (Student Aid Report - details how much need-based aid they are offering) earlier than if you file after February 1st. I believe they process all the pre-Feb. 1st, send responses, then begin to process "late" filings and send responses in the order receieved.

You must remember that Rice promises to meet 100% of any student's demonstrated need, so they shall consider you up until classes start.

As for people that filed by February 1st but haven't filed their taxes yet, your estimated numbers are acceptable. However, you must do two things before you receieve a response: 1) login to the FAFSA website and submit a "correction" FAFSA with the exact numbers, and 2) send Rice a copy of both the parents' and student's (if applicable) W-2's and 1040's (including all Schedules filed with the IRS). According to an email I recieved from the financial aid department, they shall consider you and send you an SAR before recieving your tax return, but, IF THE AMOUNTS DIFFER SIGNIFICANTLY FROM YOUR ESTIMATES, they may deny you the aid on your SAR. So, be smart when estimating.

One more thing: RICE USES NEED-BLIND ADMISSIONS - emilia was correct in her observations that the admissions department doesn't use financial information in their decisions.

Let me know if you have any more questions. This information is from what I gathered from Rice's published documents (web and print), and from email correspondance with the Financial Aid department, however, I cannot be held accountable for incorrect information, although every effort has been made to make this information as accurate as possible.

Good luck! ID decisions are this week!

ok...i am doing most of it...just asking my mom about her stuff...
What about the CSS yam? I was went on collegeboard to find it and it says that i have to pay a fee[which is ok] but i dont have a credit card and i dont know anybody that does...i was trying to find the CSS on paper but I cant seem to find it.
Good luck you guys!!

hahah there are mistakes on that one...well....yall know what i mean...:)

Hi wannabe ~ I will look later for you...on my way to work. In the meantime, why don't you call the College Board and ask since the form belongs to them. There may be a way to waive the fee if money is a problem or they may be able to process it over the phone with a check. I believe it cost us about 45-60 or so total as three of the schools my son applied to needed the CSS. Best of luck to you. You could also ask your school counselor got help. they may have a form to waive the fee....Good Luck on admission maybe today :-)

OK.....

I called the Rice financial aid office today during school. The first person I talked to scared the crap out of me by saying that Rice would not give me a decision at all (I did ID) until I submitted financial documents. Then she left me on hold for over five minutes so I called back and got transferred to what I think was the admissions office. I asked the same question, but this time the person told me that yes, I would still be notified on Feb. 10th (and yes, I asked when decisions were coming out and that's the only answer she gave me) whether I was accepted, rejected, or deferred but that I would not get a financial package (if I am accepted) until I submit the FAFSA and/or CSS.

Does anyone know if Rice requires both the FAFSA and CSS? I'm off to figure that out but in case anyone knows offhand...

Yes they do...
