What's the difference? If I do FAFSA must I also do a CSS profile? Cornell requires it...and this adds to hundreds of headaches. About 10 of my schools are listed under CSS and that amounts up to $169. Ugh...when will this be over?

If your colleges require the Profile, you MUST complete it...or the schools will not process your financial aid applications at all.

While you're checking to see who requires it...check the deadlines..for Profile and FAFSA.

thanks. i hope i get a waiver though.

There are financial criteria to meet for a fee waiver for the Profile. And I'm not sure you can get it for a ton of schools. Perhaps someone here knows the number of schools limit if there is one.

6 it sucks
I have 9 schools that require it.

According to the college board

The PROFILE service provides fee waivers automatically to first-time students from families with low incomes and limited assets. In an effort to reach as many qualifying students as possible, the PROFILE fee waiver process is fully automated based on the family and financial information contained in the application.
PROFILE fee waiver guidelines are as follows:

• The PROFILE fee waiver program applies the USDA reduced price lunch income guidelines to the CSS Institutional Methodology (IM) definition of total parent income. Total parental income includes both taxable and untaxed income, with the exception of the Earned Income Credit. More information about current reduced price lunch income guidelines may be
found at Home Page.

• Parental assets are also included in the fee waiver eligibility assessment.
Dependent students whose parents report net assets in the excess of $32,850 are not eligible for the fee waiver.

• The fee waiver covers the application and six total school reports. First-time students file an average of three PROFILE reports; thus the fee waiver process meets the needs of most entering students. There is no payment required until the application is submitted. When students submit their applications, they will be notified of their charges or their eligibility for a fee waiver.

• Students who do not qualify for the fee waiver or who need to submit their reports to more than six schools may pay for their PROFILE charges using a credit card, debit card, online check or a Fee Payment Code provided by a sponsoring organization or college.

• A limited number of PROFILE colleges and sponsoring organizations provide Fee Payment Codes to students. Each Fee Payment Code may be used to pay for one college or program report and students may use up to six payment codes in the processing year.

jomur, if you are applying to Cornell, their financial aid application was due on Jan 1. I think that you had to have their customized application and copies of parent's 2007 tax return/W-2 plus the CSS Profile submitted by this date - the FAFSA to follow once 2008 taxes are done. Double check this.
