CSS and FAFSA

D is applying ED. I'm filling out CSS profile. If she gets in, I realize I get an aid offer with her ED acceptance. Can I then still fill out FAFSA to get additional aid?

Most, if not all, schools that use CSS will require you to also submit FAFSA. They will use FAFSA to determine any eligibility for federal aid such as the pell grant, work study, federal loans. They will use CSS to determine eligibility for any institutional aid. A schools FA offer will include any federal aid you are eligible for. For instance if you are eligible for the Pell grant that is included in the offer from the school. Generous Schools such as Harvard include federal aid in their award where a student is eligible for it.

So yes you will have to submit FAFSA. But no it will not be to get additional aid, it will enable the school to include federal aid in your award. If you do not complete FAFSA you will probably get no need based aid. Schools that require CSS require FAFSA as well (except for a couple of schools that do not accept federal money).

You gave me the best, clearest, most concise explanation. I am printing it and saving it. Thanks
