I am a little confused about this "supplement" that my family needs to fill out.
As of current when I did the FAFSA my Dad had not filed 2006's, let alone 2007's tax returns. As a result, we just did some guess work on the numbers.

However, since 2005 my family has purchased a small business. Needless to say, it's not going so hot and when we put in all the numbers it said that our EFC was 0. I couldn't believe it. I'm nervous now because although we are doing poorly financially I didn't know it was this poorly (my Dad is the owner and hasn't been taking a salary for a year) and I suspect that we'll have colleges checking to see if we weren't lying.

Anyways, for this CSS supplement does anyone have any tips for filling it out? Do students usually have to fill this out or do parents do this? Especially since we haven't filed our taxes yet?

Sorry if this sounds confusing or dumb, but even my parents had a hard time filling out the FAFSA, so we're trying to get all the help we can.
Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

We own a small business (farm) and had to fill out the supplement.

There is NO way that my son could have filled it out. In fact, we had to set aside about a week to really work on the numbers so we could fill it out before the deadline.

Your dad will probably have to make some guess on the value of the business. If you have an accountant, he may be able to help.

An EFC of 0 doesn't mean they will automatically think you are lying. They may ask for verification.

wow...i just file my parents business supplement using their 2006 and 2007 supplement....we own a small business and our efc is 0 also...dunno ...it might be tougher since your dad didn't file taxes for 2006 and 2007....they might think that u put it on there on purpose...dunno...goodluck..
