I'm a student from Vietnam and I have a few questions related to the financial aid application procedure.

What do I have to send along with the CSS profile? Is the tax return necessary or can I use substitutes? For example, I think I will send the bank statement and my mother's labor contract, in which there is a statement of salary. Is that going to suffice?

How do you calculate family contribution? My parents were never married, and my brother and I live on my mother's income, never on my father's.

Salary: $740/month, $8,880/year. However, we use up $600/month due to expensive education.

Bank savings: $10,000.

When we filled out the CCS, there was a phone number that we could call when we had questions.

I do recall that they need the actual tax return because they are also looking at deductions taken, etc. However, I don’t know what they do for international applicants who may have different paperwork. This is why I think you should call.

Calla…this student is an international student. I don’t think that phone number will help them.

You do NOT send tax returns with your Profile. Your COLLEGES might require them, but you don’t send them to the College Board. At least this was the case when our kids applied. I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong.

If your college requires returns, send them an email and ask them what to do.

Your family earns $700 or so a month but spends $600 a month on education? Really?

Your income is what your parents earn. Expenses are not deducted from the earnings.

@thumper1: ahh, no, $600 includes everything, including the high educational costs So, how shall I send the verification of income? Because my mother is not taxed on her income, may the tax documents be exempted?

Seeing that you have experience in this, ccould you please elaborate on the process? I’m kind of lost in this whole financial aid thing. Thank you!

International students often have differnt requirements in the fin aid process. You have to follow the directions each school has EXACTLY.

First of all, that your parents are not married doesn’t matter. If you have both parents alive, you need financial info from both of them. Doesn’t matter if your father doesn’t pay penny one, doesn’t live with you, and won’t pay, wont’ cooperate, though you can request a Non Custodial Parent Waiver from each school and see how that flies. Both parents are hit up and whether they want to pay or not has nothing to do with it. Many parents don’t want to pay.

You put down your info and then the colleges will likely respond asking for what they want in evidence. They will likely want to know exactly how much you are paying for rent, taxes, food, living supplies, etc, living on what you do, unless that is something usual. Sometimes family live on little because someone is subsidizing the family in terms of not asking full market rent, covering utitilities cost, taking care of the food and other necessities. When you live on so little, this often becomes of great interest to the financial aid offices. But for now, you send in your info exactly as asked, and wait for the questions and request for other documents.

The problem is that our relationship with the father was, and still is really bad. We cut off contact years ago, so now it is impossible for us to obtain his financial info.

So, in short, I don’t need to worry about what document to send just now and only have to fill the CSS first?
