CSS Profile Anxiety

Hi guys, just had a question. I think I know the answer, but I just want to make sure.

I was recently accepted to a top university. This university is need-blind in admissions.

On the CSS Profile, they ask what the parents are willing to contribute. If we dramatically lowballed this, would my admission be rescinded? Or is the question essentially useless, like we thought?

Thanks!

You were accepted. They aren’t going to rescind, but you need to tell them how much you can pay and I think if you are honest they will try to meet your need. Doesn’t mean they will.

You’re always going to be expected to pay the higher of:

(1) your calculation of what you’re able to pay

(2) the college’s calculation of what you’re able to pay.

So, lowball all you want - it won’t make a darned bit of difference!

So why do they even ask? Well, it’s possible that an employer, or relative, or family friend has offered to contribute to your college expenses, meaning that you have more money available than is apparent. If that’s the case, then the college can save its financial aid for someone who needs it.

Yes, I wouldn’t worry about that question, the answer isn’t really considered…I think they expect some to lowball, they ultimately decide what they think they can pay.

Colleges will calculate your expected price based on the financial information you send in. Put whatever number down that you like.
