Mortgage and rents means what it says… so if you pay rent on an apartment, that’s rent. Same for a house.

Yosup, many many many many schools have Jan. 31/Feb. 1st FA application deadlines. I actually have not heard of one as late as yours except for renewal applications for students already enrolled in their colleges.

The very latest ones for incoming freshman that I have direct experience with are March 1st.

The college want the applications early for new students so they can work up a financial aid award for them to accompany any offers of acceptance. If you don’t know how the money part is going to shake out, how do accept one offer over another?

After trying all night and getting kicked out - I was FINALLY ABLE TO SUBMIT OUR CSS/PROFILE at about 11:15pm. So keep trying. If it isn’t fixed, at least it is working intermittently.

It only take one school with a Feb 1 deadline to put people in this predicament.

yosup - not to scare you but I suggest double checking your schools deadline. A 4/30 deadline doesn’t make sense. Some of our schools need FINAL documentation like actual tax returns and such by a later date but they all want the FAFSA and CSS/Profile right about NOW. BTW WHAT school has such a late deadline?

How do I make corrections after I have submitted it?

Hey,

I’m a student, and trying to make life as easy as I can on my parents, so I’ll try to do this at 3 am when everyone is asleep. Of course, asking my parents to stay up with me would be ridiculous, so could anyone give me a list of things I should ask them for in advance?
For example, I see there’s an example about total assets, which I would have no clue on.

Thanks!

EDIT:
My parents are filling out FAFSA on paper so I can just copy everything over, so if it’s on the FAFSA I’ll have the information.

Powerbomb,

On the FAFSA website… Step 3 - Follow up… click on the link that says “make corrections to a processed FAFSA.”

Renais,

On the FAFSA website… “Before Beginning a FAFSA” … menu on left: “Documents needed”

In fact, read widely over this whole “before beginning…” section.

'rentof2 - for the corrections…it says that it takes 3 days to process the request. Is it ok if I make changes AFTER Feb.1st for Feb.1st deadlines?

THANKS!

Yes. Just get your estimated FAFSA in before your deadlines. Corrections can come later.

So, it’s fine even if the EFC will be lower after corrections?

Thanks!

@'rentof2

Yeah, I saw the FAFSA one, that’ll be fine. How about the PROFILE one on collegeboard? I can’t get to it reliably right now :(

Yes. Make the most accurate estimates you can. Probably erring on the slightly-lower-income-than-it’ll-actually-end-up side is better than the reverse… but as long as you’re in the ballpark you shouldn’t have any significant upsets.

If your EFC is a tad lower in your estimated FAFSA then it turns out to actually be, then worst-case they’ll take back a little aid you may have been offered. If your EFC is turns out to be higher --meaning you need more aid-- some of what you might have gotten could be allocated to other students by that time and you’ll only get more in loans in an adjustment.

Know what I mean? Best bet… be as accurate as you can be. Then, no big likelihood of unfortunate surprises.

Ours just went through. Best of luck!

I’m talking about the University of Michigan. From their site:

.

No idea why U of M has such a late date. The date to be considered for all state/federal aid is March 1st though. Of course I’m not going to wait till the end. I submitted both the FAFSA and PROFILE, and I’m going to mail in a corrected PROFILE Monday or Tuesday. Also, U of M says they start giving Financial aid packages early march…so I really don’t know what their deal is.

Anyways, I have a question!! So if for some reason, I get my Financial aid package before my corrected PROFILE makes it to U of M, will they change it and offer me more aid if I need it?

Thanks!

Renais, the Profile can be very probing, asking complex questions. I’m an adult and I don’t even understand some of what they’re asking about. In my case, if I don’t have a clue what they’re asking, I know my answer will be 0. But that’s because I am the person who banks the checks, pays the bills, does the taxes, balances the checkbook, monitors everything related to money in my house.

I would not let my kids take a whack at that for a NY second. Please involve your parents. Much money is on the line.

Another thing…can you edit the CSS PROFILE after submission as well?

Renais, it’s more important that your answers be correct than you not inconvenience your parents. Some of the questions will want figures from your parent’s 2009 tax return; questions about assets include some things but not others. If your parents have a mortgage, you have to know how much they owe, what the monthly payment is, and what they paid for the house when they bought it.

It’s tough enough for parents with all the paperwork at hand to complete these forms – I would not count on my kids to do this task, esp. when the stakes are so high (as in, how much FA would we qualify to receive?).

Xposted with 'rentof2!

Yes, miss murder. Make sure to print out a copy of the Profile after you complete it. Later you can make corrections by hand on the copy and send it directly to your college(s). You can not make corrections and re-send it to a college you’ve already sent it to via the web. Must be on hard copy.

Just make sure to print it out when you finish your estimated one.
