I am the parent of a High School student and we are trying to complete the CSS Profile. The registration asks if you own a farm. We do, but if you check yes, the system requires you to also check self-employed. The income from the farm generates only 1-2K in income per year. We do not operate the portion that is farmed, that is done by someone else. Only 10 acres of the total 31 acres are actually "farmed." The remainder is set aside for our personal use and pleasure horses (no income derived from the horses). I also work full-time in paid employment. We do not fill out any farm-based forms (such as schedule F) when we submit income tax.

How do we handle the question of farm and self-employment?

Thanks.

An addendum to the above. We do submit a Farm Rental Income and Expenses form 4835 with our income taxes. So, I guess I DO check farm ownership on the CSS Profile. What has me baffled is the requirement that I check self-employed when I most definitely employed full-time in a salaried position. Any comments or suggestions?

I’m the parent of another senior who has her applications in. It’s now time to fill out the CSS profile. A bit confused, here. Our family lives on a farm but we get no income from it. It’s a hobby farm mostly animals, dairy goats just for family consumption. We do have 30 acres 25 of which we declare as tree farm for taxes. So . . . should we do the farm supplement? How does it work? Are they looking at assests or expenses? How do you determine assests if we get no income from the farm?
