I'm wading through the CSS Profile for the first time, and wondering if anyone knows how the figure for current high-school tuition expenses for the applicant is factored into the aid calculation.

It depends on the college. Schools sometimes consider the amounts you will continue to pay for SIBLINGS who are still in high school.but even with that…it’s not always the full amount you are paying that is considered.

It also matters why you are paying HS tuition for a sibling. If this is a student with special needs who MUST have a specialized private program, that might carry more weight than private school that is not a necessity.

Also…read carefully. You wont be paying tuition at all for this current HS student when he is in college next year…so what you are paying now really won’t matter at all.

When schools consider this at all, it is for siblings who will be in private HS.

This is for the student completing the profile; SD-115A

How much did or will your parents pay for your education for the 2014-15 academic year?

Yes, you can put the amount down. But it won’t matter at all for NEXT year’s financial aid because you won’t be paying that amount to the HS.

Maybe the colleges will look at it and say…“gee, they were able to pay $30,000 a year for HS which can now be used for college”.

Answer the question honestly, and then forget about it. I really don’t think it will affect your need based aid calculation one way or another…because you won’t be paying it for the 2015-2016 school year, right?

Yup, won’t be paying those next year. No problem answering it, just wondering what it’s for.

Is the question asking about the current student or is it asking about any tuition for YOUNGER kids?

Just curious.

Nope, specifically for the current student.

I have the same question. How will they use this information? It wouldn’t be right to say the funds are now available to pay for college since they don’t know where those funds came from in the first place. They could have been a gift from a grandparent that is no longer able to offer assistance, etc… If we say ZERO they will know since it was a tuition based HS they attended.

If you say ZERO, and your parents paid your high school tuition, you wouldn’ t be telling the truth on the forms. If your grandparents paid it or you had financial aid or a scholarship paying your private school costs, then the answer is truthfully zero

Um…would that HS tuition paid by grandparents be included as “money paid for the student” on the FAFSA?

Probably. And on PROFILE too. Any money paid for the student should be so reported. How any of this is taken into consideration with awards does differ from school to school.
