I am filling out the Profile for the first time. I have good info for it except, obviously, complete income info for 2014 (I'm self employed so do not know what I will earn exactly).

I've done the FAFSA in previous years for a different kid and have done that ASAP in January then gone back and updated it after I filed. I take it the CSS doesn't work this way, once you submit you have to update by hand/on paper or something? You can't update and resubmit? No IRS auto tie-in or anything?

There are no ED schools so nothing is due now - if it is a pain to update I'll just sit on it until I have the info. Just wanted to check here first.

Yes, it is on paper to each school… huge hassle, ridiculous in this day and age. Second in technological backwardness only to the mis-named “IDOC” process which SOUNDS electronic, but is all paper all the time.

You need to contact the schools to find out about updating the Profile. YMMV depending on the school. We had some schools that wanted us to print out and write in the corrected numbers from our taxes. We had schools that used IDOC, so they got all of our tax documents that way. We had schools that asked for our completed tax returns…now schools link to the IRS data retrieval tool.

You cannot update the Profile online like the FAFSA.

Regardless…as a self employed person, just remember that you need to file ASAP! No requesting an extension until October this year.

I have never had any problem filing my taxes by February for FAFSA. My income isn’t complicated and I don’t have any expenses that are difficult or unusual.

Thanks to both of you - sounds like I’ll just wait until February, but double check the colleges to see if any need it earlier for some reason.

It depends on the school. For some schools, you need to print out the profile with correction and mail it in. Some schools would just use your FAFSA info for correction (as early CSS profile is based on estimation). While other schools may request IDOC to verify the record.

Ugh. I had no idea this was going to be so difficult. D is applying EA to a school that requires the profile to be filed 11/15, so I’m estimating as best I can for 2014 but of course I will have to make changes. Very frustrating.

OK, I better make sure none of D’s EA schools want an early Profile.

If I submit to one school now, can I submit to the rest later or is it all-or-nothing now?

You can submit to one now. When you add another school later, you can update, and that second school will get the updated version.

After submitting our CSS to the EA school there was a message on the screen explaining that changes can be made when you add another school.

Thank you. Turns out none of her EA schools need it before February so we’re good.
