CSS profile is not required unless u need FA..right?

I've been reading how people are doing for Yale SCEA,
and realized that many ppl mentioned CSS profile.
I thought that CSS profile is not required unless you apply for Financial Aid....
Am i right?

Correct. If your family does not need Financial Aid and can afford to pay full-fare, you do not have to fill out the CSS Profile or FAFSA.

Can I fill in FAFSA instead of CSS??

It depends. Some schools – Yale, for example – requires both FAFSA and the CSS Profile when applying for Financial Aid. Other schools, just want the FAFSA.

For Yale, you have to do both

Quick question regarding the CSS Profile…

I’m applying SCEA to Yale, and I’ve read that you can submit the profile by the November 1st deadline for a provisional FA offer based on last year’s tax documents. My family talked about this and decided not to go for the provisional FA offer, because our numbers have changed significantly in the last few months and so that offer is likely to be quite off the real one.

Is there any disadvantage to doing this? I’m not screwing myself out of a FA offer period, am I?

^^While Y asks for 2009 tax forms, I don’t believe they base provisional FA offers on them, but rather on your 2010 estimates that you submit on your Profile. They always ask for tax forms, and likely would look for any major unexplained anomalies between the actual 2009 and estimated 2010 numbers. You should call up Y and find out for sure, but it’s my understanding that your final FA package is modified depending on the differences between your 2010 estimates and your final 2010 taxes.

At least up to this point I have not seen any indication that Y gives different FA packages depending on when you apply (as long as it’s before the final deadline). Recently I decided to forgo the provisional FA offer and just send them the Profile after acceptance, if it happens ;). But that’s because I already have a kid there now and therefore have a pretty good idea of the amount of FA we will receive. For families new to college FA, I think an early FA package at Y can be very informative, as it’s likely to be one of the most generous FA packages a student will receive.

Thanks 10char

You also need to send Y FA a copy of 2009 taxe returns; also non-custodial Profile and farm/business if applicable:

Hi everyone, would you guys know if this also applies to International Students? I’ve heard conflicting things, that all internationals apparently need to submit a Certification of Finances because they’re coming from outside the country, or on the other hand, that like American applicants, they don’t.

Any advice would be much appreciated! :D

^^ If the information you need is not on the website, then you should call the Y FA office. While there are many knowledgeable members here, for this kind of information you really should go to the primary source. The FA people are very nice and will put your mind at ease.

OP: This is true- Not applying for financial aid= No forms for financial aid to fill out- for Yale or any other school.

Just be sure your family can in fact afford 4 years of college expenses out of pocket.

Thx all:) i have another question. Can SCEA applicant send his FA forms by January 1, the deadline for regular decision? Cuz i kno some other colleges still accept FA forms after the person gets in early. But i dunno about Yale…does anyone kno??

Their website says ALL required financial aid forms (obviously not the FAFSA yet) are required to be in on November 1.

It sounds like you just need it in by November 1st, if you want a financial aid estimation when you get results in december

jgraider is right. At a session with an admission representative, she said that if you don’t get the financial aid stuff in by nov 1st “we don’t run out of money” but that you won’t get your calculated package by the time you get your acceptance (if you get one of those at all.)
