The CSS "priority" deadline for a lot of my colleges is February 1...but apparently the 2009 income tax returns are needed to fill it out, and my parents only get them on January 30th from their employers. How are we supposed to go about this? I don't want to them to fill out the CSS last minute, but is there a way to avoid it?
And what does "priority" mean? :

Fill the Profile out using your best estimates from the end of year pay stubs and bank statements (for things like interest and dividend income). Make sure you PRINT A COPY of the Profile you submit. Get this done to meet your schools’ deadlines.

Taxes should be completed as soon as possible after all the documentation is received (Feb 1). This is not the year to wait until April 15 to file your taxes.

Call the school to find out how they want you to send updated info reflective of your 2009 tax return. The schools will tell you what to do and where to send it. In our experience, the corrections needed to be hand written ON a copy and mailed to the school BUT my experience with this is from 2006.

If you have two schools with the Feb 1st deadline and two with later deadlines, should you just send to the first two with the estimates and then fill out after doing your taxes and send to the other two? Can you even do this? (ammend your CSS profile online after sending the first two) Thanks for any advice. This is my first experience with financial aid.

No, unfortunately you can’t amend the CSS Profile to include corrected information. You need to fill it out with estimates and then send paper updates to each school.

It’s a real tightrope parents have to walk! If deadlines are Feb 1 and taxes can’t be completed by then, there’s no way to submit a final Profile; the only option is to submit estimates first, then corrections when final taxes are done.

I see. I think… So if you have an early deadline for one school, you have to submit the CSS profile for all the schools at that early time?

We have two that are Feb 1st (one that prefers it by Jan 15…), but one school doesn’t need it until March 1st. So, you only get one chance to submit the CSS Profile? And then it’s locked?

Aha. Found this on College Board’s website:

Q: Should I register for each college separately since they have different deadlines?

A: No. You should only register for PROFILE once. You may list all the colleges and programs that you want to receive your PROFILE information when you register or you may add colleges and programs to your application at a later time. If you send your PROFILE information to additional colleges and programs through the “Add Colleges to Submitted Application” process, you will have the opportunity to update your original application responses. Your updated data will only be reported to the added colleges or programs.

So, if you have an early deadline, you should just list that school on your CSS Profile, send that off, then later add the other schools with later deadlines and you can update your original profile. So, if you have some deadlines pre tax return, some post tax return, this seems to be the way to go.

When people say you can’t ammend your CSS Profile online, I guess they are meaning you can’t ammend the CSS Profile online that you already submitted to a particular college. Once you’ve submitted to a college, you have to correct by hand and mail it to them (or however that college specifies).

Sorry for the additional post–the last two paragraphs of the previous posts are my words, not from College Board’s answer to the question (in case it wasn’t obvious). Don’t want to confuse anyone… this is all confusing enough…
