CSS profile non-custodial parent issue

Hi,

so I sent all my applications to colleges and now we are trying to figure out financing. I am an international student, so I have to fill the CSS profile. My parents are separated, so I submitted the application with my custodial parent first, but the CSS profile does not let my non-custodial parent send his information through his own profile, even though all of my colleges require his information (double-checked). We created his own profile (entering his email address and my information), so he could submit it on my behalf, but after we filled in the getting started and parent information section, it told him “As of this time, the student has not selected a college that requires your information. Once that student makes such a selection, you will receive an email notification, to complete your application at that time,” which is not true, because my colleges require it and I already submitted it with my custodial parent. I asked the css info link for help, no answer yet. What should I do? The deadline is approaching so fast, for some colleges it is due January 15th.

Thank you,
Ondřej

Not all schools that require the CSS Profile require the non-custodial parent’s information. Have you checked to make sure that all or some of the schools actually require that? If so, then I’d call the CSS profile help desk and talk to someone.

@suzy100 thanks, but I checked it multiple times, it is on their websites, in some school-specific profiles they ask me to submit their information too, and on cssprofile.org there is this list of schools that require it and all of them are there (Pomona, Lehigh, Williams, Middlebury, Connecticut). There is some bug within the css system, otherwise I don’t know.

See if anything. Here helps…

@mom2collegekids thanks, I am just reading posts like this. There are people having the same problem, but there is no solution yet

@cimrman
Where you note that “We created his own profile (entering his email address and my information), so he could submit it on my behalf…etc.'”, did you do this by acting upon the email your dad would have received from the College Board? It would read as follows below:

"Your Student’s Financial Aid Application - Next Steps

Dear ,

Student is applying for financial aid at one or more colleges or programs require that you complete the 2018-19 CSS Profile.

To complete the application:

Go to cssprofile.org.
Sign in with or create your own College Board username and password.
Complete and submit the application.
Please complete the application as soon as possible to ensure that Student’s financial aid request can be processed on time.

Thank you,

The College Board"

@Politipotamus exactly, that was how we did it. Clicked on the link, created the profile, entered the info except the email address (used his instead), agreed to all conditions, but when we went to the profile and wanted to enter the information, we just couldn’t get past this above mentioned line. BUT in the determination section, when you choose with whom you spent more time and who will be mentioned here, if I choose that it was my father in both cases (at the beginning, I tried it with my mother in the first question, because it is true, I spend more time with her) then it works. However, I have this feelings that something is wrong, it looks like a student application, not the parents (you can still pick the schools, enter student assets, etc; nothing is omitted). Tried to create even another non-c. profile on a completely different e-mail address, same story. I guess I will send it in this form, though. I will just e-mail the colleges that we had some issues with it and if they really require non-c. application (regardless if it is written on their websites, some cssprofile document, etc.), just to have a precedent in case they won’t receive it on time.

For all students that will deal with the same issue, these are the links to other collegeconfidential threads, where people ask similar questions (wasn’t answered in any of them and none of them was devoted exactly to this problem, but it may be helpful).

This is crazy! If anyone find a solution let me know! :’(

@cimrman Hi: Quick question -after clicking the link in your dad’s email and when you arrived at the CSS Profile ‘Welcome’ page, did you and your dad click the ‘Sign In’ box or did you click the ‘Sign up’ box (where it states, "Don’t Have An Account? Sign-Up)? You and your dad would have wanted to select the ‘Sign up’ option.

Regarding, “BUT in the determination section, when you choose with whom you spent more time and who will be mentioned here, if I choose that it was my father in both cases (at the beginning, I tried it with my mother in the first question, because it is true, I spend more time with her) then it works”, Here you would have wanted to still select your mom where it asks about who you lived with most while, yet, selecting your dad for the 2nd part where it asks, “Select the parent(s) whose information will be provided on this application.” Doing so would then bring you to the ‘Parent 1 Details’ page where it states “Provide the following for <your dad’s=”" name="">" in blue lettering.

It looks like you most likely ended up completing another student Profile instead of an NCP Profile for your dad -based upon what you noted in your last post and and the fact that you were asked questions about school choices, student assets, etc. Those questions would otherwise definitely not have appeared.

I’m hoping this can be easily rectified by returning to the original email alert your dad received, clicking the link in it again to navigate to back to the Welcome’ page, and clicking the ‘Sign up’ box (where it states, "Don’t Have An Account? Sign-Up)?

If it doesn’t work, you’ll need to contact College Board (use the contact info at the bottom of your dad’s email) and ask them to delete(?) that app you completed with your dad (NOT the one you originally created for you and your mom) so that he can then complete a true NCP Profile.

Let me know!
