I'm registering a CSS profile and have a question about one of their prompts. They ask you for the amount of money to be awarded to you in scholarships/grants. However, I haven't even applied for any scholarships yet (except national merit), but I know that I will probably get some money in the future. What should I do? put in zero for now?

There was a similar question on my son's CSS Profile that we were filling out around this time last year. It was question SD-110. Is that the one you're referring to? It was actually asking for the amount awarded to you in grants for the school year you are currently in. In your case it would be referring to this academic year, 2008-09. Since you're a high school senior that answer is probably 0, unless you got some special grants for a private high school that you currently attend or something like that.

Next year if you are filling it out to renew your financial aid at your college, that's when you'll report the scholarships and grant aid you receive for your first year of college, including national merit and whatever else. They will be asking you about 2009-10 at that point.

Does that make sense?

I had this same question. I figured it was 0 since my daughter is a high school senior.

Since you answer the question in "real time" unless you have some scholarships in hand that you know you are going to use, the answer is zero. Next year is when you may have some answers for that item, hopefully.

It's a poorly phrased question, too. I just re-read it carefully and it says, "How much did you receive in scholarships and grants during the 2007-08 school year?"

You do have to answer it in real time, and you can't know what grants you might receive later in this school year. However, if you really wanted to answer this question in a way that was technically correct, next year you really wouldn't report any scholarships you receive this coming spring, either, since they wouldn't have been received during the 2009-10 school year... although they may have been awarded to you for use in the 2009-10 school year.

But, surely, the intention is that you should report on next year's Profile any grants or scholarships you receive this spring for use in the 09-10 school year.

Odd, though, when you read it as written.

Ok thanks to everyone for the help.

"How much did you receive in scholarships and grants during the 2007-08 school year?">>

The 2007-2008 school year was LAST year's school year. If you are filling out the Profile now, you would absolutely know how much you got in scholarships last year.

This is the 2008-2009 school year. Even for that you should already know how much in scholarship money you already received.

Understood, thumper1. As I mentioned in the beginning that was the question asked last year. The point was that assuming there is the same question this year, it's an oddly phrased question, still.

It was just used as an example. I think everyone's on the same page here.
