On the CSS Profile, it asks whether either parent is self-employed and if so, appears to require you to indicate that you own a business (or corporation). Do you complete this as such even if you do not "own a business" per se but do periodic consulting work? Any insights appreciated.

How do you get paid for your “periodic consultant work”? Do you have an LLC? Do you get 1099 forms from those with whom you consult?

This “periodic” consulting income has to appear on your Profile somewhere…is there a spot for “other income earned”?

Partial 1099, the other direct payment (no LLC or 1099). Had to choose so stated yes – own business. Not sure how this will factor into financial aid, however it was the only viable option provided. Thanks.

Does it make any financial difference if one is self employed or not with the CSS

Many of the CSS profile schools will ask to see a business statement or your schedule C. If you are writing off some expenses as part of the schedule C (such as travel costs, or writing off the cost of purchasing a computer or other equipment) – some colleges may add those costs back in as income. Since the college policies vary, it might be worthwhile to write separate letters to college financial aid offices explaining the need for any schedule C deduction that might seem unusually high.
