Hi!

On the non-custodial profile, it says to fill out the student's university and university type.
Unfortunately, I have not received any acceptance letters yet and my college counselor is practically forcing me to complete it this week. What do I fill in for that section?

Also, for the income part... my non-custodial parent is being quite a troublemaker as she lost her 2012 tax income. Can I base her income off from my dad's income? I'm pretty sure they're both similar.

Thanks in advance!!

You non-custodial parent MUST provide their own income. They cannot use someone else’s. At the end of the process, many Profile schools require submission of tax returns either directly to,the school OR through IDOC.

Your NCP should be completing this with HER best estimates for,what she earned in 2013… And then she needs to get her taxes done ASAP.

You should be submitting the Profile to all schools that require it. Is that the name of schools the counselor wants?

@thumper1, thanks for the reply.

I ordered a copy of my NCP’s tax return transcript and it should be arriving in 5 - 10 business days. Would that count as a substitute for her tax returns?

Oh and for the university part… I misread the information LOL. It was asking whether my sibling (and not me) will be attending college during 2014 - 2015. My bad!!

bump!

Does anyone know if I can use the transcript of my mother’s 2012 tax return as a substitute for the actual one? She said she lost the actual one.

How did you mom do her 2012 taxes? Manually, software, use a preparer? If software and she still has the software on her computer she could print off another copy and sign it. If a preparer, they may have it in their system and it could be printed off and signed.

I can’t say 100% that a tax return transcript will be accepted but I can’t think of a reason why it shouldn’t be. It’s really better than a copy of the return and serves as verification for fafsa. Is it possible to have your mom sign the transcript at the bottom before sending it in?

@annoyingdad

Ah, she told me she had a preparer to file her tax returns for her. She’ll ask for a copy of the forms when she comes back to meet me, so I guess I won’t need that transcript anymore. I didn’t know that filing for taxes would be such a holistic process that you would need someone to do it for you lol… I better enjoy the time I have now before going off to college.
Thanks for all the help!

Butler…you don’t NEED someone to file your taxes for you. many folks use tax preparation software and do it all by themselves. Some, like your mom, choose to have a tax preparer do the job for them.

It sounds like you will have both the transcript and the signed tax return for 2012. Good.

But keep in mind, any financial aid award you receive from a college based on estimates (which using 2012 info would be…the actual awards are based on 2013 tax info) will be ESTIMATES only. Your actual final award will not be given until the 2013 tax return is filed, the FAFSA updated with 2013 info, and the Profile updated (you need to ask EACH college how they deal with Prodile updates). There is also likely a deadline date for receiving the 2013 tax returns if a college requires this.

You want to be sure ALL is done in a timely fashion. You want your finalized financial aid award BEFORE you make your college matriculation decision.

@thumper1

Thanks for the advice!
I thought that once you have submitted your CSS Profile, you can’t make changes to it?
How would you update the profile so that it matches with the 2013 tax return information?

You need to contact EACH college and find out how to update the Profile. They will tell you their process for doing so.
