For the number of vehicles reported, itemize for each the make, model, year, whether it is leased or purchased, the cost, and the date of purchase or lease. Identify which, if any, is the student’s.
I have divorced parents, so I have to fill out both a custodial and non-custodial CSS Profile. One of my colleges is asking about cars my family owns, but I’m curious as to what it means by family? Does it mean my custodial household I report on my main profile, or both households put together, even though the cars are not jointly owned? Neither of my parents are remarried so they’re both single parent households, if that helps any.
I was just going to put down my mother’s car as she’s my custodial parent, but my father technically owns my car, so the second question made me wonder?
Thanks
No, your custodial parent fills out the CSS profile and your non custodial parent fills out the non-custodial profile. You should not be filling out the forms
I’m aware that they’re supposed to fill out these forms, but my parents don’t understand/won’t do it. If I was not filling it out myself, it would not get done. I used their tax documents to fill out both for them months ago, and ask them questions as needed. I’m first in my family to go to college and have no precedent to go by, so my situation is untraditional. I apologize for not prefacing my post with this, but I didn’t think it was relevant to my question.

I re-read this prompt today, and I think it refers to just my custodial family, since non-custodial is technically a separate entity on the profile. This does prompt another issue though: my mother got into a car accident a few weeks ago and her car was totaled, so as of right now she does not own a car. She is buying in the next few weeks, but as of the day I’m submitting this, she does not own one? Should I assume for the car I know she is buying, or should I fill it out as today?
@gillywhs , my understanding is that the forms should be filled out with whatever info is actually true and accurate on the day you submit the form.
Right now your mom doesn’t have a car. So no car should be listed for her. Do you or younger siblings have cars
And on your dad’s NCP form, isn’t there a question about cars/assets on that? If so, that’s where his car would be listed.
Agree with M2CK. If your mother had paid outright for that car and it’s now declared totalled, it’s like she owns no car.
If she financed it and it’s declared totalled, it has no value. In any case, this is not a showstopper question.
Your father’s info goes on the NCP. If he owns your car, it’s his info. Nothing says you only partially fill out the NCP. The custodial-only issue is the Fafsa. The CSS asks for both parents’ pictures, as individuals (when divorced.) If he pays/paid for two cars, one that you use, he’s the owner. You report that on his form.
