When you submit your css profile for the november 1 deadline, you have to submit all the other schools you are applying to RD too? or are you able to just sending it to Stanford now then the others later?

what is a css profile

UH OH! Extreme, if you're SCEA, you need to get on it. Go to collegeboard and look it up in the finaid section...

BUMP lol can anyone help me :)?

yeah! same question as fallenstar. and just curious, how long does it take to fill it out?

How long does the profile take to be sent to the university?

Thank you all for alerting me to the SCEA deadline on the Profile. I had thought nothing was due 1/1/06 or later.

The CSS Profile uses the IM (Institutional Methodology) - rather than/in addition to the FM (Federal Methodology) to determine the expected family contribution and therefore financial aid. It includes a fuller range of family assets (like houses) and noncustodial parent contribution and a ton of other information not collected on the FAFSA.

Per the College Board web site you can add additional colleges at any time but cannot change the profile after it is first submitted. After the first submission you have to notify the schools individually of updates/changes. It cost $18 per school so if you're sure your S/D is applying to specific schools you might as well enter them all in the first place; then no worries about remembering later. Otherwise wait and add them as you apply. I don't know how long it takes to complete - too long is my guess - I'm working on it this afternoon. But since you have to estimate 2005 info it'll probably take a while. Especially since my husband is retiring next month then starting self-emplyment consulting - we may have lots of updating! Plus Stanford wants additional information like 401K's etc.

College Board does have a ton of FAQ's and should answer most questions on this form.

Per College Board:
Q: When will schools and programs receive my information?

A: A paper report of your PROFILE information will be sent to the colleges and programs you select within one week after you submit your application. Some colleges and programs choose to receive your information electronically. Those colleges and programs will receive your data according to the schedule they have requested, which can be as early as the next business day after submission.

Do we have to use the CSS Profile instead of the FAFSA? My family isn't very well off, but they've worked really hard and we now own a very nice house. I have a feeling the Profile would make my expected family contribution a lot higher than it already is. :)

Me and my dad just sent in the CSS. I spent about 10 minutes doing the student section and took a 90 minute nap while he did other sections. They're really good about asking questions that double-check answers and everything.

When I look at our profile - our EFC is going to be pretty freaking high. Argh.

So if one were to do it in the next day or two, would it be in time for SCEA?

I believe Stanford requires the Profile in addition to the FAFSA (which can't be filed til after 12/31). My understanding is that as long as the Profile is submitted online before Nov. 1 it should be on time for SCEA - I'll be finishing ours tomorrow.

Having a nice house that the family worked really hard for is not going to count against you. Putting most of your investment $$ into a huge McMansion plus a vacation home might not look so good, however. There's a lot of wealth in our home town yet at the Financial Aid presentation at the high school last year, one father was really incensed that their second home might count against their getting aid. Wonder where he thinks the money comes from?! The CSS Profile seems to make the old fashioned assumption that we should treat college funding as a priority in our own family financial planning.
