Hi, my mom recently remarried this past February, do I have to include my stepfather as parent 2? On the fafsa, which I completed in early January, i just reported my mom as divorced, so should I do the same on the CSS?
Are you just completing the Profile NOW for the first time this year? If so, you must indicate the marital, status as of the date of your filing of the Profile. If married, then you must put married. And yes, that means your step parent income and assets also need to be listed.
@thumper1 even if the fafsa and css dont match up?
Yes. But be prepared for verification because they don’t match up.
Why are you doing the Profile so late in the process?
They already won’t match, because they were completed at different times.
I wasn’t aware that a college required it
@thumper1 do you think fafsa will now require me to submit the new info? will i get less aid now?
No, the entity that processes FAFSA won’t even know what you did on CSS. And, you did it right on FAFSA.
Yes, you’re going to get less aid now because your stepfather’s income now counts.
I know this is a bite in the fanny, but you need to know now the situation because you’d be facing it next year. What good would it do for you to get more aid this year, if next year you got a lot less aid and suddenly couldn’t afford the school.
You need to quickly do the net price calculator on the school’s website and include your stepdad’s info. If the results are unaffordable, then you need to pick a different school right away.
BTW…does this school also require your bio dad’s info?? Which school is this?
Does stepdad happen to have any kids currently in college?
@mom2collegekids this is university of Michigan.
@jym626 no, but he has 4 kids of his own
