Hi
My son is in senior year.
Uc weighted GPA 3.6.
SAT 1420
What are his chances in UC s & CSU s?
Major :computers
For the UC’s, his best chances would be a UC Merced, UC Riverside and UC Santa Cruz. UC’s tend to be very GPA focused so anything below a 4.0 UC capped weighted makes it a tough admit even with a 1420 SAT score for Computer science or Engineering.
Below is some statistical data for the UC’s and CS/CSE is highly competitive so above average stats are needed to be a competitive applicant.
2018 Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.40-3.79 capped weighted and not major specific:
UCB: 1%
UCLA: 2%
UCSD: 7%
UCSB: 8%
UCI: 7%
UCD: 14%
UCSC: 33%
UCR: 49%
UCM: 82%
2019 UC capped weighted GPA averages along with 25th-75th percentile range:
UCB: 4.23 (4.15-4.30)
UCLA: 4.25 (4.18-4.32)
UCSD: 4.16 (4.03-4.28)
UCSB: 4.16 (4.04-4.28)
UCI: 4.13 (4.00-4.25)
UCD: 4.13 (4.00-4.26)
UCSC: 3.96 (3.76-4.16)
UCR: 3.90 (3.69-4.11)
UCM: 3.73 (3.45-4.00)
2019 Data:
25th - 75th percentiles for SAT totals:
UCB: 1340-1540
UCLA: 1330-1550
UCSD: 1300-1520
UCSB: 1280-1520
UCD: 1230-1490
UCI: 1250-1510
UCSC: 1200-1450
UCR: 1130-1400
UCM: 1020-1290
For the Cal states with exception of SLO, they admit by Eligiblity index and major.
His EI= (3.6 x 800) + (1420)= 4300
His EI makes him competitive at all the Cal states with exception of San Diego State which would a slight Reach and Cal Poly SLO which would be a Reach.
Make sure he has at least 2 safety CSU’s on his list and preferably his local CSU unless it is either SDSU or SLO.
Best of luck.
SJSU will also be a reach for an applicant with a 4300 CSU EI aiming for computer science (software engineering and computer engineering may be a bit less reachy). http://www.sjsu.edu/admissions/impaction/ shows past year thresholds for admission by major.
UCM andMost of the CSUs are viable. What’s he looking for outside the classroom?
@ucbalmunus: Sorry, I forgot about SJSU which had an EI threshold of 4450 for Software Engineering and Computer science of 4675 for 2019 admits, another CSU that is a Reach.
Thank you to all
He got internship in medical based software company.
He did 7apps related in his internship.
Volunteer hours: 250,
clubs : python club, java club
Leadership: linkcrew, SAY
CSU’s do not consider EC’s with exception of SLO which only asks for hours/week, if the job/internship was major related and if EC’s included a Leadership position.
EC’s and his internship will help with the UC’s, but they are considered important.
Very important to UC admissions is GPA, HS course rigor, test scores and personal insight essays.
Thank you
Hi,
My son entered wrong year in his academic history in UC app like 9th,10th and 11th school year. He started his high school year 2016 but, he entered 2015. Is there any possiblity to correct his mistake??

Have him send an email to UC admissions with the correct years for his academic history.

For the Cal states, he needs to email all the campuses individually. If he has already setup his student portals, he can communicate through the portal.
Thank u. He sent Email.
