CSU Application

Hello. I had a few questions.

  1. Why does the cal state application only allow you to list courses in progress, courses planned, and GE courses completed. How can I list all my lower division and other classes that I've taken that are not GEs (lower division business classes).
  2. I received an academic renewal at pasadena city college. How can I enter that into the csu application? I took 12 units there and after the academic renewal my gpa is 0.0 at that school.

Thank you.

For #1. It doesn’t matter what else you took because they’re not concerned with it at this time, they just want a snapshot. All they care about is a) will you have 60 units by the end of the spring semester including the golden four courses, b) what are your golden four grades and c) what is planned/in progress to see what is transferrable and what areas are incomplete. When they recieve your TRANSCRIPT (which you must request to be sent asap after your app is submitted) they can see everything else that already on it, they can fill in the gaps.

Anything not on the CSU Breadth that is in your college catalog as transferable will be transferable, they just won’t count towards GE (which for now is all they care about; impacted majors such as business will take time after the fact to review your major prep). They will recieve the CSU certification in ADDITION to your transcript and put the pieces together.

Do not count Academic Renewal or W in units attempted when calculating your GPA. When you get AR or a W, it’s like erasing that it happened. They dont look at/don’t care, so it’s not calculated into your GPA.

@shellebelle212 I went to a school where +/- grades were given, what should I put when I got an A-?

@pugzandhugz I just double-checked my app and they don’t give that option so… I had an A- from another school as well and I just put “A” but factored the A- points into the overall gpa.

@shellebelle212 I’m coming from a cal state university… how will I determine what courses transfer so I can calculate my proper GPA?

@shellebelle212 Are you sure? I’m not applying to CSU’s, but I know that the grading options (+ or -, etc.) can be selected somewhere early on in the coursework section for the UC application. It’d be a shame to get rescinded for something like that. Maybe email somebody? Or is there really no way to input that (seems likely considering @pugzandhugz mentioned the same difficulty as well)?

@goldencub Yes, I’m sure for the CSUs. I’m not submitting any UC applications but I did 2 CSU apps already and they only have single letter grades, no +/- (Also, this is referring to the golden four - no other slots for the rest of your grades to be put in).

The CSU app is kind of like a snapshot, and the golden four grades are just generally considered so they see where you’re at - for the GPA the +/- makes a difference, but for the golden four requirements they just want to see that it’s done and the letter grade. it’s not dishonest because the GPA calculation is correct, only 3.7 point for the A- instead of 4.0. They just want an overview and then will look into the details later. I’ve consulted others on this as well

@pugzandhugz You could check out assist.org but I’m not sure if it’s includes 4-year to 4-year articulations… but I wouldn’t rely on online sources anyway, they all have disclaimers that say it can’t be trusted for 100% accuracy, its just for general planning. Talk to a counselor.

@shellebelle212 Ah, that makes sense. Good to know.

I also got academic renewal from pcc, and didn’t count those classes. I put 0 units attempted and 0.0 gpa for a college I had only taken one class at and got a W.

Yup, Academic Renewal and W is not factored into GP, GPA, units attempted or units completed.

The CSU application is terrible. Also, if you go to any of the Peralta Colleges or CCSF and applied to those community colleges before the beginning of this month, message me to find out how to get your CCCID number. It’s a stupid process that the schools never bothered to mention to me and had to spend 4 hours figuring out. The CCCID is kind of important.
