CSU Long Beach Bob Cole Conservatory for Music Education

Hey guys!

So my journey into music is an EXTREMELY late one (we’re talking not starting any music lessons until two years into college, though I could play piano decently before). I am not the greatest at playing, but I have found a lot to love in music and want to start a career in it.

Anyways! I am attempting to transfer for the second time (I began college at UC Davis for pre-vet, and then switched to a community college to figure out my life. lol) and am trying to decide where my best bet might be.

Does anyone know how difficult it would be to get into the conservatory at Long Beach for a music education major with my main instrument being clarinet?

I’m trying to be realistic, but nothing wrong with being hopeful too

Long Beach is an excellent conservatory. Noone here can assess your chances since we cannot hear you play  Your teacher would be the best guide…

I am wondering if you have considered doing music for a BA - which often does not require an audition for admissions- and continuing with lessons, practice, and performing in extracurriculars. Conservatory is not the only way to progress in music. Then, after having a few additional years to develop, you could apply to a grad program in music education. Or performance if you progress a lot, and want to do that at that point.

I also want to suggest that you can study anything you want to study without regard to ultimate career. Though things have been moving toward a view of college as direct preparation for career, that is, a vocational process, it really is still true that major and career do not have to match. And a bachelor’s in anything gives you access to jobs requiring a degree, to grad schools and to professional schools like law, medicine, nursing, business etc.

So perhaps you don’t have to figure out your life just yet.

Can you go back to UC Davis?
