CSU Long Beach Presidential Scholars

S was invited to apply and all information has been submitted. We have no idea what happens next and the people in the office are sort of sketchy about it. Does anyone here have any experience with this program? It's a full ride if he gets in, so we are very eager to get information.

Thanks!

That's awesome. Congrats!

There was an article in the LA Time describing the program features (but not the acceptance process) a few months ago, so you might search their archives. If I recall, the Scholars get priority registration and housing, have private opportunities to dine with the Deans and Department heads, etc. But, the President has taken some political heat for this program, which is probably why its not widely advertised.

Thanks bluebayou for the tip on the article...I'll try to track it down...I'm wondering how many kids actually apply vs. how many are accepted...etc. That info doesn't seem to be anywhere...maybe it's rather an arbitrary selection process and that's why they don't publicize it more...

Oh and thanks for the congrats too - :-)

hey ckr1147, i also applied to this program! yeah i do hope i get in cuz its a good "backup." well good luck to u

Syawn - good luck to you as well! Maybe you and my son will meet - I understand there is some sort of special event that all the Pres. Scholar applicants are invited to...you mentioned it's a"back up" for you - whee are you applyng/hoping to go?

well...usc or ucla is my first choice, if i get in to both :P
and it depends on the money too-if usc or ucla doesnt give me a lot of scholarships/financial aid, then ill prolly go to csulb if i get in there too
how about your son?

He is already accepted to CSU Fresno - he applied to U Tulsa; U Miami; Goucher (in MD) and a couple of others - he wants to go out of state but it all depends on the $$$ - if he doesn't get in/ get money, he'll go to Fresno State...

I just found out that CSU Long Beach gives about 65 of the President's Scholarships - last year they had about 300-400 applicants - truthfully think son is a longshot because his GPA isn't great, but I guess you never know

ooo wow only 65 out of 300-400?? wow, that selective huh?? well good luck. if u dont mind, can u give me your son's stats?? is he a valedictorian or semifinalist/finalist??

I was surprised about the selectivity as well...altho, it would be interesting to know how many kids who apply to the program and are chosen actually go - wondering if there is like a "second tier" - for example, yourself...if you are chosen, but decide to attend UCLA or USC, do they take your scholarship and give it to someone else?

S is a semi-finalist - just got a letter that he did not make finalist due to grades (2.9 average) - he had a meltdown 2nd semester last year...PSA was 235 (in case you wanted to know) SAT I was 1460 - solid SAT II's as well - but has "homework issues" LOL - oddly enough his teachers like him and gae him good recs - but the grades thing is coming back to haunt him now...he is soooo ready to get out of HS - how about you?

o i am sorry about the finalist thing :(
well his stats ARE still good, and i think he can still make csulb's prez's scholars-u might want to explain about his grades, cuz they prolly will understand
best of luck
and yes i am excited to see where i go to college and for graduation of course!

If you don't mind sharing syawn, what are your stats - and which doyou prefer UCLA or USC? Are those the only other schools you applied to?

3.95 UW GPA=4.55 UC GPA
1580 highest combined SAT, 1530 highest sitting SAT
800 Writing, 740 Math 2C, 740 Chem (these are the three i submitted)

i definitely prefer usc
i also applied to stanford, jhu, cal, ucsd, and uci

visited CSULB recently and found out that they are starting to send out the Pres Scholars Award Letters in the next couple of weeks...good luck to all!
