CSU Nursing Schools

Sup guys, I recently applied to a couple of CSU Nursing programs including CSUF, CSUSB, SJSU, and CSULB; however, only after applying to CSUF did I see that you had to have a "C" or higher in Honors Chem ;____;

I took Chem sophomore year (am currently a senior) and xferred high schools towards the end of my first semester and ended with a D+ as a result of my inability to take the final. Despite this I ended with a B+ the second semester of Chem at my new school.

My SAT was an 1890 (650 CR, 620 Math, 620 Writing) and I have a 3.29 A-G requirement GPA.
Anyway, just wondering if I've got a shot at getting into any of these schools still with a nursing major, can anyone shed some light on my predicament?

Thanks in advance guys

Nursing programs are very competitive. Most CSUs have campus specific supplemental requirements. You need to look at them all and see where you stand.

Admissions officers use the term ‘validation’ - earning a B+ in the subsequent semester means they will look the other way on the D+.

Since they are so competitive, i’d reach out to my top picks and ask how they will handle it.

You may want to add Sonoma and Sac, Channel Islands to your list.

I am also applying for CSU Nursing at Long Beach, Bakersfield, and San Francisco, however I did look into Fullerton as well.

In order for the course to count for A-G credit, you must receive a “C” or better in the course. This holds true for ALL CSU campuses (as well as UC campuses, if you’re applying to any of them).

CSU Fullerton also requires Nursing Applicants to receive a “B” or better in a non-AP Chemistry course, or a “C” or better in an AP Chemistry course in order to be considered for nursing. This is strictly a CSUF requirement. The other CSUs will still consider your application (considering you met the A-G requirements without the credit from the Honors Chem course), unless they also have similar requirements (which I KNOW CSULB does NOT have this requirement, however they do require their Nursing applicants to meet a minimum STEM Eligibility Index of 3,300 - Find out how to calculate your STEM Eligibility Index here: [CSULB Enrollment Services](First-Time, First-Year Student CSULB Index | California State University Long Beach) MAKE SURE TO LOOK UNDER “STEM ELIGIBILITY INDEX” AND NOT “ELIGIBILITY INDEX”). I’m not sure about CSUSB or SJSU and their requirements.

So, basically put, your D+ in Honors Chem will only affect your A-G credit, not your admission eligibility (except for at CSUF where it makes you ineligible for admission to nursing, according to their website). However, it may affect your admission CHANCES at the other schools, but they’ll still at least consider your application. Hope this helps!

Greetings implying,

At CSUSB these will be the following required prerequisite courses that you would take your freshman year.

Prerequisite support courses required for admission:

BIOL 220 Principles of Microbiology (5)

BIOL 223 Human Physiology and Anatomy I (5)

BIOL 224 Human Physiology and Anatomy II (5)

CHEM 205 Fundamentals of Chemistry I: General Chemistry (5)

English: 107, 104A, 104B, or 106 (4)

Critical Thinking: Comm 180, Hon 104A, Math 180, Phil 105, Phil 200, Psyc 105, or Soc 180 (4)

Comm 120 or Hon 104C (4)

MATH 115 or Statistics (4)

The bottom line to your question is that you would need to have at least a 3.5 GPA to be considered here for the pre-nursing major, (while you take your pre-reqs) So I would say that you may want to have a back up major.

Regarding your Chemistry class, a CSU would still recognize your Chemistry class as valid even with the D+ because as long as you got the passing grade second semester, we will back validate the first semester. The D will just weigh down your GPA a bit. Chemistry is the only science that we will do this for.
