CSU to CC to UC Transfer Help?

Hi, I've been lurking the College Confidential forums for quite a while now. This goes back to 2013 when I was applying for colleges last year and while I was making my decision as well.

In the spring of 2014 in high school, I made the decision to enroll for classes at CSULB, but I have realized CSULB is not the school for me. The fact that it is a commuter school 30-45 minutes away from my home makes socializing rather more difficult than usual, the professors are hit or miss in terms of quality, and overall I feel like I would have more educational opportunities at a UC school. Back during high school I was UC eligible but did not accept admission from any as my parents heavily pressured me to attend a CSU.

My question is, how many semesters would I look to spending at a community college if I transfer out of Long Beach to a close-by community college near my home? This semester I have taken MATH123 (Calculus II), COMM130 (Public Speaking), PHIL100 (Intro to Philosophy), KIN151A (Weightlifting), and ENGR101 (Intro to Engineering). Next semester, I will be staying at LB and transferring out to a CC for the Fall 2015 semester--this spring I will be taking Calculus III, PHYS151 (Calculus based physics), CECS100 (Critical Thinking in the Digital Age: An intro to programming class), and ENGR102 (Academic Success Skills). I understand that not all CSU courses transfer to other schools; I have spoken to an adviser on the matter so I project that only Calculus II, Calculus III, and Calculus-based Physics will transfer, with Public Speaking as a course that may transfer.

In addition, I took 7 APs in high school--they were Human Geography, European History, Computer Science A, Chemistry, US History, Language & Comp, and Calculus AB. I passed all of these with a 4 with the exception of Human Geography, which I got a 3.

With all these courses I have completed in mind, how many semesters could I expect to spend at a community college? My major is currently Electrical Engineering but I may change to Computer Science, regardless I transfer or not. I have used ASSIST and friends have told me I could probably spend 2 semesters at a community college and transfer out, but I want to make sure this is a legitimate/plausible answer.

I want to be sure i understand your situation - you are in your first semester at CSULB, find commuting makes it tough to socialize and think the profs are hit and miss.

I hate to break it to you but, UC teachers are hit and miss too. Also, commuting to UCI or UCR is basically the same deal, you still won’t be on/near campus when the fun starts .An out of town UC is going to cost an arm and a leg…$30k+ per year. Something to really understand before heading down that path. Where will the money come from?

I’d encourage you to give it more of a chance. Consider moving into an apartment near campus with a classmate - (probably $10k/yr. ) Join some clubs, hang out after class, attend some basketball games and get engaged in campus life and give it the old college try.

Now, to answer your question, to transfer into a UC, your best bet is to use the Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) program to facilitate the move. (UCB, UCLA and UCSD don’t participate in TAG) You need a min of 60 units and must complete a specific set of courses. The list of required courses and GPA changes by major and campus. As you can see from this link - at UCD, a 3.3 GPA is all you need as long as you meet the other requirements.

<a href=“Transfer Admission Resources”>http://engineering.ucdavis.edu/undergraduate/transfer-admission-guarantee-tag-program/</a></p>

To your question about # of semesters at CC - there’s no really a minimum. Your 7 AP credits count as 21 of the 60, Two 18 unit semesters and summer class and you are there. As a transfer, you can apply as soon as you have a map to 60 units (not including summer). The challenge is timing. You aren’t currently a Calif CC student so, you aren’t TAG eligible. Yet - if you want to transfer for Fall 15, your application is due next week. This move could take you a year off course. I think Merced and Riverside both admit Spring transfers while Davis doesn’t. Perhaps you could get situated for Spring 16 transfer to a UC.

I think I’d drive over to UCI and/or UCR and talk to someone in admissions about transferring directly from CSULB as a JR - They are the experts and can best help you understand the feasibility of your plan. it can’t hurt to have the conversation.

Good luck.

Stay at Long Beach; it is a good school and you haven’t hit your major classes. You’ve been in GE classes which are low man on the totem pole. The UC’s have the same problems, as my daughter well knows.

engineering is better at other csu’s. you may have to just transfer to another csu. UCs dont like to take former csu students, since so many courses dont transfer. like intro to engineering. its a one-unit course. nothing like it in the UCs. not even csu faculty sent their kids to csus.
