I am currently a first-semester freshman at Sonoma State University majoring in Psychology, and at about three months in I am pretty sure this is not the place for me. I am a NorCal transplant from SoCal and I am a much bigger fan of it up here than I am down south… however I am not finding SSU to fulfill my academic, social, or personal interests at all. I am heavily considering a transfer to a community college back down in SoCal and then to eventually to transfer back up to UC Davis. I was curious to know if anyone has tips regarding this process, potentially on whether or not I should stick it out for the whole year at SSU or if transferring to a CC second semester is an ok alternative. I am currently applying to other colleges (UCs and one or two other CSUs) and was also curious to know if it would harm my application to transfer to a CC second semester of this freshman year.
Thank you!
Generally, CSUs and UCs only look at Jr level transfers. They only evaluate your college level coursework but AP units can be used for your 60 unit min. Privates like LMU and USD are open to sophomores and include your HS GPA and SAT/ACT in their evaluation.
You can transfer to a So Cal CC mid year if you are really miserable but, I’d recommend you stick out a full year and see if SSU grows on you.
I hate to break it to you but Davis is also in N Cal and has a decidedly N Cal vibe. Why not target a So Cal CSU and/or UC?
Thank you for your reply! I was thinking that staying the full year would be the best option- but I’m having a hard time finding my place here and I can really only see the negatives of my experience progress even farther as the year goes on. I’m really trying to have an open mind about it all- but I have that gut feeling that it just isn’t resonating with me. I actually very much enjoy the NorCal vibe, more so than SoCal, but SSU on it’s own just isn’t seeming to be my cup of tea.
