CSU to CCC to UC?

I go to a CSU (SJSU) right now and I'm in my 2nd semester of my Freshman year. I'm a Business Administration major, and I want to change my major to Econ for UCs. I want to go to a UC like UCLA, Davis, SB, or SD. I've been thinking that I could transfer to a California Community College like West Valley College as a sophomore, try to get a TAG or TAP and then transfer into a UC as a Junior. I have a 3.9 GPA at SJSU right now. I do have a LOT of questions about this, so bear with me please.

-Will all my SJSU units transfer over to a CC?
-Can I still be eligible for the UCLA TAP or UC TAG?
-Will I only stay at a CC for 1 year? I don't want to stay for more than a year. I'm considering taking classes during this upcoming summer to try and get more units out of the way.

I only have 25 units completed at SJSU, and I am currently taking English 1B at Evergreen Valley College, so that clears the problem of having too many CSU units. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I was in the same situation last year. From my experience, this is what I can tell you:

What really matters is if your SJSU units will transfer to a UC which they probably will, but you may want to make an appointment with the campuses to look over your transcripts to make sure they do. Your CC will be the ones who decide which courses satisfy breadth requirements though (I’m assuming you will be using IGETC to fulfill gen ed).

I’m not sure about TAP, but you shouldn’t have a problem with TAG although each campus has slightly different requirements for TAG eligibility so you may want to look into that further. Personally, I have 25 units from CSUS and was able to TAG with UC Davis.

It is possible that you will be able to transfer after one year at CC, but this depends on how many prereqs and breadth requirements you have left to take. I know UCLA puts a lot of emphasis on finishing prereqs so it is very important you complete them. Also because you have units from a 4 year, you will probably have a unit cap so be sure that you finish breadth requirements and as many prereqs as possible without exceeding the cap.

I would suggest that you first go to assist.org and figure out what prereqs you will have to complete for your major. If you have already taken classes that you think may satisfy some of the prereqs, take the course descriptions from those classes and match them up with the course descriptions from the similar CC class. Make an appointment with a counselor at the CC you plan on attending to verify your matches and solidify a plan for what classes you need to take to transfer within a year. Depending on the level of experience your CC has with CSU to CC to UC transfer students (zero, in my case), you may have to meet with several counselors or do a lot of the work yourself when it comes to planning out your schedule. Even if the person you speak with seems to know what they’re doing, always do your own research to verify their advice, I really can’t stress this enough. Definitely take classes over the summer and aim to have at least 30 transferable units done before next fall; it’ll make your life easier and you’ll most likely need this for TAG anyway. Lastly, if your CC offers it, apply early for graduation. I know some campuses with this option give you an early registration date which can really help when registering for gen ed classes that often fill up quickly.

Hope this helps!

1) Depends, and probably not. You’ll have to get the course checker person at the CC to certify which ones transfer over.
2) UCLA Tap requires 7 Honors classes by the Fall before you want to transfer, so if you want to transfer in 1 year you probably can’t TAP. TAG is most probably doable.
3) Since Econ doesn’t have that many pre-reqs, and you’re taking summer classes, you can probably try to transfer in one year.

Some UC campuses will not let you apply via TAG. See the matrix at http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/counselors/files/CC11_TAGMatrix_final.pdf</a></p>

As for one year at a CC, there is some debate here about whether you have to have 30 units at the CC to apply for TAG or not. I don’t know the authoritative answer, I just bring this up so you check with the admissions office at a UC to find out.

Thanks mikemac for giving me that heads up. I looked at your link and it looks like Irvine is the only one that I can’t apply for a TAG, which is okay because I don’t really want to go there anyways.

sounds like me last year
I wasn’t very happy at sjsu even though I had tried to get that ‘college experience’ by joining a fraternity, but nothing filled up that void I had, ya know?
So, I did at the time what I thought was a very risky thing and drop out, go to a cc(DVC) for a couple semesters and transfer out. This is my second semester at dvc now and I plan on applying to UC’s in the fall. I’m taking my time because I figure I may as well knock out ALL my pre-reqs along with igetc before I go bankrupt doing it a UC haha.

@RUFFLZ: Glad to know that someone is on the same boat as me! Haha. I feel like I’m the only one on this path right now, and it is indeed risky. I was thinking about pledging for Kappa Sigma at SJSU, but I knew that it wasn’t what I really wanted.

You’d be surprise at the amount of students unhappy with the situation they were in but were too lazy/hesitant/nervous/cared too much about what others think. I knew A LOT of these people because of the DU brotherhood.
It indeed may look sketch when your friends wonder where the **** you went, but you’ll realize that the people who hit you up AFTER the fact are the ones that are worth keeping. and the fact that you’ll be at a top tier university within the coming years may be a bit of a surprise to a lot of them;)
Not to make this a philosophical tip, but life’s far too short to be unhappy about something. If this is so, do something about it and it seems like your making all the right moves! :)

Thanks for the advice! I’m pretty motivated right now, and I’m going to see some counselors this week to sort out everything.

@HockeyGiant, did you ever find out if you could transfer out of the ccc after 1 year? if so, did you apply your sophomore year (when you first entered a ccc) to a uc?
