I am currently attending San Francisco State University with is part of the CSU system in California and my current but not yet declared major is Mechanical Engineering.
I am currently a sophomore and taking some classes related to my major.

From what I have researched I have found out it is extremely difficult for an declared engineer major to transfer from a CSU to UC due to the requirements and courses needed for engineers to be able to transfer.

My main question today is that since I have not declared my major yet and have had in mind to see if it possible to transfer to a UC like UCD, UCSB, or UCSD, is it possible for me to transfer from my CSU with a different declared major and change my major once I'm in the UC or is their another alternative way I can do instead of this process?

I don't really find falling back a year if I have too for getting accepting to any of these UC's.

It is hard to see how you would go about changing your major into mechanical engineering your senior year. That’s regardless of the university (UC or some other).

You might have an easier time transferring to Cal Poly SLO, but in case you also find that difficult because of prerequisites consider taking ME as a graduate program. In practice that’s not so unusual – many engineers get a Masters Degree.

Assuming you have a compelling transcript at SF State discuss the option of transferring with the goal of following up with an MS degree with the UCs (or Cal Poly) of interest.

My friend send a transfer application to UCSB and got accepted but his problem was that he didn’t have all the required courses and prerequisites for Electrical Engineering at the time, so he had no choice but to stay at his own university.

I have the same problem, I do not have all the required prerequisites for my major. Do you know if it is possible to transfer with a different major then change my major as soon as I’m in the UC?

My sense from what you’ve written is that regardless of your initial UC major you won’t be able to complete the requirements for an ME degree in the senior year. Is that an issue for you? You need to cover the material regardless of your situation.

I encourage you discuss the transfer openly with the heads of the mechanical engineering departments at the UCs that are the best fit for you, and follow their advice.
