So, this current year I'm a freshman at SJSU but I'm planning to apply to a UC.
When I first got out of high school, I didn't plan on going to a UC so I didn't go to a CC.
However after finally getting my act together, I've decided I want to do more.

I know its harder to get into a UC from a CSU than a CC, but I just had a couple questions.

Has anyone or know of anyone who has successfully transfered from a CSU to UC(Cal/LA/Irvine)?

Would it be better if I decided to go to a CC next semester over SJSU?
Or is it possible me to go to both schools? Take some classes at a CC and some at SJSU?

Also how do I know if my classes meet the UC transfer requirements? Since there isn't an articulation I was wondering how would I know? Would finishing a CSUs GE requirements be enough + the extra classes needed for each major?

I currently have a 4.0 with 16 units, with another 16 after the spring semester finishes.

A friend of mine a couple years ago transferred from CSULB to UCLA, Junior transfer, close to a 4.0.

Your best bet (and this will surely be echoed by everyone) is to transfer to a CCC. You’ll have a much higher chance of acceptance to schools such as UCLA and Berkeley, and have a great shot at UC Irvine.

I don’t know anything about the CSU GE reqs, but if you’re serious about ending up at a UC, transfer to a community college and kick ass.

Thanks for the reply but I have a question.

Will I have to complete 2 years at the CC? Or can I just do 1? Since I will have finished 1 year at SJSU by this upcoming fall, will those units not transfer over?

I’ve thought about going to a CC, but I’m just a little confused on how it’ll work.

You know, I think they will, but I’m not completely sure. I know people who have done what you may do. As far as I know, most of their courses transferred over, but you’d really have to check with someone at the community college you are thinking of transferring to.

Also I was wondering, when I do apply do I have to finish all the pre-reqs before I apply? for instance for business majors you need to have 2 semesters of calculus. This upcoming fall I’ll be taking the first and the 2nd in the spring.

Is there a section on that application that lets me put my future courses for the spring semester?

The more pre-reqs you have completed, the better off you are. Yes, you write your planned courses for the spring on the app in November, and update your app in January.

UC gives transfers from CCC top priority, then from other UC transfers…and if there’s space for CSUs/other 4 years, which is pretty rare. So you are better off going to a CCC and not just taking concurrently at SJSU. it’s way cheaper too, and you can sign TAG (Transfer Agreement Guarantees) from a CCC to any UC except Cal and Berkeley…and you can check which courses articulate/transfer at [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) for your major. You can also talk to the CCC counselors too, they help A LOT. And yes, UCs have “grade updates” for transfer students where they have you put in the grades you got the semester you applied, and have you type in what classes you will take the following semester.

“how would I know if my classes fulfill the UC requirement to transfer” You compare your course descriptions to classes taught at the UCs and guess. (srs). And yes, contact the schools and get advice.

basically you have a low chance of getting into a UC from a CSU.
Rather low.

transferring from a CC to a UCI is pretty dang easy. I slept, sat on my ass, never studied, didn’t really do much of my homework and got in at all the mid tiered UCs. My Ecs were nothing remarkable either and my essays weren’t even really proofread. I’m admittedly a very bright person and a good writer and BSer (how can I exaggerate the importance of my role at work while still being completely truthful?)

how to get into UCI from a CC

1 complete IGETC
2 complete as many major prereqs as possible
3 get above a 3.0GPA
4 write a half decent essay
5 read your acceptance notification

I was considering dropping out to go to CC, but then I read on the UCI site that you can’t TAG if you have previous 4 year college course work. ):

So I’m probably just going to stay in CSU and just try applying.

If anyones done that ^, any tips or any info would help.

Even if you don’t have a TAG, if you keep up with your studying skills (4.0, 16 units) you’ll be fine. You won’t even need a TAG. If you want to end up at a UC, it would be best to transfer to a CC, kick ass there, and voila!

yeah honestly if you can get a 4.0 at SJSU you should breeze through CC… and save some money while your at it. Altough I suppose if you like SJ state then you should stay, it’s very likely your (school) social life will die at community college.

The problem is that CSU and UC courses are different so if they don’t all transfer you will need to take extra classes to transfer.

“it’s way cheaper too, and you can sign TAG (Transfer Agreement Guarantees) from a CCC to any UC except Cal and Berkeley…”

Cal and Berkeley are the same school. you can’t TAG for Berkeley or UCLA, but if you qualify you might be able to get into the TAP program depending on your CCC.

i actually went to a CSU before my current CCC and so far have been accepted to UCSD, UCSB, and the University of Miami.

i’d recommend going to a CCC if you are really serious about going to a UC because it will save you a lot of money and give you a much better chance of getting in, especially with a TAG.

I am currently a Sophomore at CSULA right now. I have a 3.3 GPA as a Communication (Broadcast Journalism option) Major and have applied to UCI and UCSD. I never took SAT II’s in high school or have any AP credit though. I have finished all my GE’s too and I am starting to take major classes this quarter. Transferring from a CSU to UC is a mystery because there aren’t really any guidelines to follow for it and I have called UCI and UCSD many times asking about whether my classes would transfer over or what I should guideline I should follow for transferring from a CSU and they just said, “Apply and see what happens…” There have been people who have transfered to a UC from a CSU before so as long as your GPA is good, I think you have a great chance. I don’t know about me since my GPA isn’t that competitive but there’s no harm in trying. Just send it in and see what happens like they said…

One thing i recommend you do is definitely plan to reach the 90 required quarter units or 60 semester for transferring. I only decided to give a shot to transfer this year but I was on pace to reach around 85 units and would have fallen short of the required units. Just plan out ahead so you won’t be scrambling for classes like I did… It’s very possible to transfer from a CSU to a UC and since you have a 4.0 right now, you should have a great shot. Just stay motivated and I will let you know if I get rejected or accepted…

I had a hard time grasping the university concept, which led to my downfall when I entered CSULB. I totally flunked my freshman year, nearly being academically disqualified. I picked up my act the second year. I currently have 5 classes, and I think my grades will end up being 4 A’s and one 1 B. I haven’t calculated my GPA yet, but I’m sure it’s not going to boost my current 2.1 GPA by much.

I was thinking about going to a CC. Would I be able to transfer a majority of the credits I took at CSULB to the CC, then use those to transfer to UC? I was hoping to do this and get out of the CC in one year. I really want to head over to UCSB. I am an art major, which normally does not have emphasis on GPA so I thought I might have a shot. If transferring CSU credits to CC then UC isn’t possible, I might just have to graduate at CSULB. After doing some reading here it seems it’s near impossible to transfer from CSU to UC, much less with a GPA as horrid as mine.

Oh also, because I failed classes, I’m actually still a freshman. I’ll be a sophomore with 40 credits when this semester is over. I’m planning on cramming my summer with courses to catch up in credits.

Thanks in advance, and sorry if these topics have been covered. Navigating forums is hard for me.

P.S: Just calculated my GPA. If I manage straight A’s this semester, I’ll end up with a 2.75.

I’m nearly positive that your units would transfer over the the CC, and would carry with you through to the UC. The only reason I can’t say I’m 100% certain is because I haven’t heard it confirmed by a CC counselor, which is something I think you should do if you definitely want to take this route. You’re academic record follows you wherever you go though, so your units should too.

If you go to a CC and complete at least 30 units there and bring your gpa to a 3.0 or better you can TAG into UCSB. Just make sure you don’t go over the 90 unit limit.
