CSU/UC Chances?

What schools should I consider applying to? My dream schools are SDSU, Cal Poly SLO, and UCSB but I think they're all a reach. I plan on majoring in either business or communication (UC's dont seem to have an undergraduate business program). My local CSU is Long Beach.

GPA: 3.38/3.28 (I'll explain later)
SAT: 1940 (720 CR, 560 M, 660 W) *I got 580 on an earlier SAT
ACT: 28 Composite (28 E, 24 M, but: 34 Reading)
AP's: US History (5), Language (4), Psychology (3; didn't take the class, only took the exam), Chemistry (n/a), Literature (n/a). *I also took one semester of World History but got a D (retook in summer school, A+)

EC's: work as a lifeguard/swim instructor for the city, coach cheerleading (community service), swim team, water polo team, dance (4 years), tutoring, Key Club (1 year), junior lifeguards, volunteered at a local library, participated in Every 15 Minutes, ran random community service events (carnivals, 5k runs, ect)

I'm well aware that my gpa is AWFUL. I was diagnosed with ADHD right after my sophomore year and began taking medication and it did wonders. I got a 3.9 gpa my junior year (4.0 & 3.87) which is a HUGE upward trend from my sophomore and freshman years. Unfortunately I can only explain this to the UC's and not the Cal States. Any recommendations/any colleges definitely not worth my time? I also plan on applying to Long Beach, Chico, CSUSF, UCSC, UCSD. Most of my classes for all of high school have been honors or AP except for math.

My son has two Ds on his HS transcript. He has taken accelerated classes and has a overall weighted GPA of 2.8. He will retake the classes that he earned a D in next semester, his final HS semester. He wants to apply to California State Universities. Will those Ds automatically bar him from acceptance?

Kdefreit: it depends. you need to look at the eligibility index for each school. The CSUs have a calculation that they use if the GPA is below 3.0. It is posted on each school’s website.

You will get in to every Cal state university, except MAYBE SDSU (You have like a 75% chance at admission). For the UC’s, you have a pretty decent chance at all of them except UCSB, UCSD, UCLA, and UCB. I’m saying this not because of your GPA (you can always explain that) but because of your SAT scores.

BTW, what’s your UC GPA? Is it also around a 3.4?

In decent I mean 50% chance.

bigyonb, “you will get in to every Cal state university, except MAYBE SDSU”, sorry, no shot at Cal Poly either with that grade point average (nor SDSU). I cannot fathom the applicant would have any shot at UCSB either. Just my opinion of course :)

Yes it is also around a 3.4.

One thing I forgot though is that I got a D in AP!! World History as a sophomore (I didn’t mention the AP status in my original post), switched into regular world history for second semester and got an A and then took world history in summer school and got an A+. However because it was not the EXACT same class (AP versus college prep) my high school doesn’t count it as repeated on my transcripts, they only added the A into my overall gpa. Does anyone know if the CSUs and UC’s do the same? Or would they just throw out the D because I did technically repeat the class? With the D included it lowers my gpa substantially.
**My counselor said that I would still be CSU/UC eligible. But now I have a new counselor and she’s an idiot and had no idea what I should do about it.

Ed 2 will definitley help with chances of getting in.

But He should be fine.

There is a possibility that you’ll get into SDSU… don’t listen to people saying you won’t. I’ve known many people who only had a 3.0-3.1 and got into SDSU easily.

Bump! Thanks to everyone who has responded. The only school I’ve heard from so far is San Francisco and I was accepted :)

I believe that UC Riverside has undergrad business degree. Have you checked that out?
