CSU -> UC Transfer Help

Okay so here is the lowdown. I am currently a freshman at a CSU because my SAT scores somehow didn't get sent out during the application process. I am trying to transfer to a UC as soon as possible. My question is should I go to a junior college my second semester instead of staying for the second semester? I would be trying to transfer to be a sophomore at the UC. I know that junior colleges have a much higher priority over csu students and I am a little unclear on what I should do.

Last year UCLA accepted about 35% of applicants from CCCs but only 6% of transfer applicants from CSUs and I imagine the story is similar at the other UCs. However, even if you do drop out of the CSU and start at a CCC next semester it is unlikely you would be able to transfer to a UC for your sophomore year. UCs almost always require applicants to have enough transferable credits for junior standing before they will accept them as transfers. I have heard of cases where people transferred to a UC after one year at a CCC but it is extremely rare.

I know that some of the credits will not transfer ie. my speech class however, I have taken a cc class in the past (it will transfer) and I plan on taking at least two during the summer. Do you think my chances of transferring as a Junior are far greater than those of trying for sophomore year?

You have pretty much no chances of transferring to be a sophomore, even if you go to the cc. Just transfer to the cc asap and then finish up classes to apply next year to be a junior there.

Would it be to my advantage to go to a jc located near the school that I want to apply to or is impartial to location? I could go to the community college located near my house and save money by not having to rent an apartment but if the chances are lower I might reconsider that idea.

It depends which one you’re looking to transfer to. UCLA and Cal don’t offer TAG programs but instead TAP (like the honors program) but not at all cc. You should look into attending one that offers the programs. Other than that I think it makes no difference.
