CSU/UC transferable courses question

Hey guys! So I know this is the UC forum, but I need some help.

I have a score of 5 on an AP test that may or may not clear all of my lower division major prerequisites for the CSU I want to attend. The problem is I took some courses at CC that are equivalent to those my AP score might clear. Most schools don’t allow double counting so I may lose units once I transfer. It is for this reason that I want to take extra units just in case that ever happens.

Could I take any class I want to make up for those lost units? So I know most CC courses are CSU/UC transferable, but does that mean that they’ll actually give me the units for that class? I was planning on taking a bunch of random electives that are deemed CSU transferable, but I realized many of them have no equivalent at the CSU I want to attend. Does that even matter? I talked to a counselor and she told me any course 1-199 is transferable so I’m assuming any CSU will accept those units even if they have no equivalent at the campus?

Does anyone have experience/know about this? Thanks!!

each campus individually evaluates APs. They may give credit toward the min units but, not the class. Call your target school and ask directly.

I’ve witnessed my son take a class at a csu that wouldn’t transfer and another ay a cc that wouldn’t. Don’t take just any class. Call the school you want to transfer to and ask them first
