CSU with low gpa... what are my chances??

Hello. I just calculated my UC/CSU a-g scores and got an Unweighted GPA of 2.81 and a weighted GPA of 3.06 . I know It’s really low, but do I have a chance of getting into one of the CSUs?

I’ve done a few ECs,
(Model United Nations for 2 years, chair for 1 year, and Harvard MUN)
(Presentation Contest)
(Part of the Journalism club for an year, and planning to become leader)
(Boston University Summer Program - 1 year)
(Student Council from gr.9~12)
(Sport Organisation Club)

But I heard these don’t count for CSUs and UCs.

My SAT scores were about 1200. (I plan on re-taking it)

Do I have any chances of getting into one of the CSUs?

All CSU’s except Cal Poly SLO use the eligibility index to rank applicants by major.

(CSU GPA x800) + (SAT Math+ CR), so if your CSU GPA is 3.06 and your SAT score is 1200, your EI is 3648.

San Jose State (SJSU) lists their EI thresholds for all majors each year (only CSU that does this), but it can give you an idea of which majors you would qualify which are many.

Also, you will be given priority at your local CSU, so you can usually get an acceptance with a lower than average EI.

What is your local CSU? http://www.calstate.edu/sas/onestopkiosk/documents/CSULocalAdmission-ServiceAreas.pdf

Not sure what you plan to study, but I would look at Cal State Channel Island, Dominguez Hills, Los Angeles, San Marcos, Northridge, Sac State, Sonoma State, Stanislaus, San Bernardino, Bakersfield, San Francisco, East Bay, Humboldt to name a few.

The most competitive CSU’s are not in the cards: Fullerton, San Diego, Long Beach, Cal Poly Pomona, San Luis Obispo and Chico State but you have a lot of choices still to consider.

Of course, impacted majors and campuses will be tougher admits and will require higher than average stats. Here is a link for the impacted majors/campuses to help you narrow your list.

Good Luck and there is a CSU out there for you.
