I have applied to CSULB for Fall 2020 and I am concerned about how low my gpa is and the many 'w’s I have on my transcript
my GPA is a 2.3
I have 8 Withdraws on my transcript
and I applied to CSULB as a transfer student for the english major (minimum requirement is a 2.0)
I am quite local to the school but out of their proximity
what are my chances of getting into the school as an english major?
Having 8 withdrawals is starting to get a bit excessive so it could hurt your chances but what is really going to hurt your chances will be your GPA.
Average CSU transfer GPA for 2019 for CSULB was a 3.2 not major dependent. For English in 2018, the average admitted GPA was 3.44. CSULB is a major Reach.
The CSU’s that look like a possibilities would be a non-impacted campus such as Dominguez Hills with an average CSU transfer GPA of 2.84, Channel Islands, Bakersfield etc. The rest of the average transfer GPA’s hover around 3.0 or higher.
SJSU lists their Transfer GPA threshold by major which for English is a 2.1 that might be a possibility. Hopefully you applied widely.
If CSULB is your target, then yes you should try to stay and improve your GPA but you are pretty far off from the average admit GPA. Even getting all A’s for the next year, will not bring up your GPA to the 3.4 level.
You are not willing to consider any other CSU for transfer?
Unfortunately no, I personally feel that CSULB is the school that will best fit for me. I do want to improve my grades, and GPA. my biggest concern was that if the school admissions team was going to pick at my 8 W’s ): do you think that if i am able to get my GPA to at least a 3.0 would give me a better chance to the school? I figured also being a so cal resident would help too.
Being a CA resident does help but being local would give you the highest bump. CSU’s do not care much about the W’s, but around 10 is considered excessive. Getting up to a3.0 will help, but depending upon how many units you accumulate to get to that GPA, you would be better off considering some other schools and try to finish your degree vs. waiting for that perfect school.
Thank you for giving me significant input! I will try harder and strengthen my GPA because that’s literally the only school that would be fitting for me.
I’m a transfer student as well - CSULB is the only non-local school I applied to (im in the OC area so i’m still in-state). My major is math, my GPA is 3.07, and I will have my golden four completed by the end of this semester.
I’m in the same area as you in terms of gpa. My cc gpa should be around a 3.1 maybe 3.2 because of the fall semester, but my transfer gpa on the Calstate apply app was at a 3.06. Also, instead of math I’m a psych major which I know is impacted. I’m not sure about math though. I’m considered local, but not sure about the likelihood of me getting in. Hope you get in though. By the way what cc are you coming from?
hondadude its either local or not. They determine this based on the high school you went to not the college. It’s a shame you were waitlisted because your Gpa is high, but it shows how much they honor the local admission. I was accepted as a psych major with a 3.06 and same grades for the golden 4.
No it’s definitely the college. For junior transfers, you must complete all of your units at a community college in your local admissions area in order to be considered local. You are thinking of freshman admissions.
Olie, you are correct, I rechecked the radius of locality and I am located in Chino Hills which is quite far. In terms of admission, I am a bit bummed out and a little shocked on why I wasn’t admitted but in reality, even if accepted, I don’t think I was going to attend. I’m aiming for CPP but after the results of CSULB, I hope I won’t be in the same boat.
