CSULB pre-nursing advice

Hi, I’m a high school student (class of '19) atm but I’ve decided my major (nursing) for college. I just would like to know information and advice ahead of time so I’m prepared. Pls bare with me, I’d appreciate your help!

Questions:

  1. What’s your opinion going to csulb instead of a com. college?
  2. What are some things you wished people told you about before entering the pre-nursing program?
**I heard that you must have a really good gpa to actually get into the nursing program and its tough
  3. Is that true?^
  4. Anything else I should know?
  5. Any books, websites, study tips you’d recommend?

Thank u so much (:

Hello there!

  1. I really do recommend going to a community college first to finish your nursing prerequisites instead of going directly into CSULB as a pre-nursing major. Being a pre-nursing major at CSULB doesn't guarantee you admission into CSULB's SON (School of Nursing). You'd still be competing with other community college transfers as well as other pre-nursing students at CSULB & other CSUs trying to get in. Furthermore, while at a community college you can take a few extra classes for a back up major just in case nursing doesn't work out.
  2. I made the right decision by going to a community college first to finish my prerequisites, thats the main thing I hear most people wishing they did. It saves you tons of money and arguably the prerequisites are a bit easier at a CC than at CSULB.
  3. Yes it is true. There's very limited spots. Most admitted students have a 3.7 - 4.0 GPA as well as a pretty high TEAS score. CSULB posts their statistics of their accepted students every year on their website! Here's the link for Spring 2016 admissions and the years before that: https://web.csulb.edu/colleges/chhs/departments/nursing/docs/PoolStatsSpring2016initial.pdf
  4. Just know it's going to be difficult! You have to have a strong work ethic since most of the science prerequisites are killer and will take up a good chunk of your time. However, its completely doable. For the TEAS I recommend buying their online practice exams and textbook directly from the ATI website. I also recommend Mometrix for the science portion of the TEAS since the ATI one isn't as detailed.

Good luck =)

Thank you sooo much for responding to all my questions!! I’ll definitely take your advice and in the meantime I’ll just plan for now, I obviously do have a couple years until the time comes. Hope you have good day!

Sincerely, NP
