Has any body singed up for the SOAR? If so what date? I did for engineering 7/27/10 but this was the only day i could register, I'm wondering if anybody else has singed up for a sooner date?

rjalali,
i have to sign up for SOAR… i assume you are a transfer? since u said that you signed up for the engineering workshop, which is geared towards transfers. here is some SOAR info for transfers and other workshop orientation dates:

july 27th is the right date just for your major and thats the only date. u’ll be fine. i am signing up for the 21st…which is earlier but its for my major since im an art student :)

Thanks for the info appreciate it :D

Do these things really last from 8:00am-5:00pm, if you’re a transfer student?

I can see spending around four-hours, but not an entire day! A campus tour would be nice, knowing where the library, admissions, and other essential buildings are located. Aside from that I don’t see how it can possibly take all day! I’d rather just meet with my department advisor, discuss my academic goals, and figure out how I can achieve those in a timely manner. For a freshman the transition from high school to university can be a change - so I can see the need to introduce these students to the university. For transfer students like myself, I basically know what courses I need to take to fulfill my degree goals, and I’m pretty confident I can figure out how to enroll in courses online. I mean, most community colleges share a similar system - at least the community college I attended did.

I had my soar last summer (engineering transfer) and heres how it works. They will check you all in at brotman hall, then you will all go to a lecture hall where they will talk to everyone for a while. Then split you up by major and give you a campus tour. After that you settle into another lecture hall and everyone introduces themselves (should be a smaller group by now). Split for lunch for about an hour. Once you come back they will briefly go over a guideline for what you should register for and then you will go to the horn center to register. By this time it should be may 2-3pm. For rjalali dont worry about not getting into classes and dont worry that your soar date is late in the summer after probably 99% of continuing students have registered. They WILL hold spots for transfer students so the core classes you will need, you will get. So far in these two semesters I have not had a single problem getting a class. They even added 20 spots to every Mechanical Engineering class for the spring during registration.

Thanks for the info EliteToast :)

I’ve already talked to an advisor for my department and have a list of classes I need to take in order to meet the degree requirements. My main concern was enrolling in the core classes (9 units) since my area of concentration requires most as a prerequisite. Also the majority of 400 level courses in my major were all open when I checked the 2013 spring schedule, so would hate to be stuck waiting around a semester due to not getting into a essential core course.
