CSU's vs Low UC's

I have two questions for you...

First of all, can you rank the following CSU's in order of best to worst... I am looking to go into the area of psychology and law/criminology, which CSU is best for those areas of study?:

CSU San Jose
CSU San Francisco
CSU East Bay (Hayward)

And second, can any of the above be better then going to a lower UC? Like UC Santa Cruz, for example?

I think that if you're willing to settle for more of a commuter school, you'd be fine going to a CSU as it's way cheaper. I see the lower UCs and CSUs as almost equal (certain programs are excepted, of course) and I think the difference is campus vibe. I live near CSUS and UC Davis and while Davis has stronger programs in certain areas and CSUS has a better criminal justice program, for example, the difference is mainly the student body and the campus life.

Regarding SF State, my friend goes there and says its good. Her professors really care and she's learning a lot. Psychology is a program that doesn't have anything spectacular about it but doesn't have any negatives either. If you're a go getter, I'm sure you could get some really great opportunities.

i'm from the Bay Area and got accepted to CSU's in Socal SDSU, Long Beach, Fullerton ,etc. Are those schools that much better than Northern Cali CSU's like SJSU, SFSU, Sonoma, etc that it's worth it to go to schools that are much farther? than go to one of the more local CSU's in the bay area?

sd is better than sf.....but lb and fullerton aren't so special...i'd go with sd, personally but hey it depends on ur major

courgette, as a general rule the UCs are more theoretical and the CSUs are more practical in the education provided. That may help you determine which suits you better.

avoidingwork, I really question how great the distinction is. Is my friend at engineering studying the same things at SFSU as my friends in engineering here are studying? I think so. He is having no fun with the same physics, calculus, and chemistry. If I were to studying philosophy, or English, at a csu, would I not get a similar education? Maybe it depends on the major, and I lack direct experience with the csu's, but I don't know how different the "theoretical" is from the "practical."

I'd take low UCs anyday. The worst UC (I'm not counting that campus that was just established last year) is better than the best CalState.

How can you question what he's saying if your argument is as strong as his? His location doesn't change much, as he might have some experience with both cal states and UCs. Your post is rude and not very helpful to anyone. At least put why you think that Cal Poly San Luis Opispo is better than UCR.

cal poly is definatley better than riverside. college conselours and recruiters hold up cal poly san louis obispo as high as UC Davis and as low was UC Santa Cruz. Cal Poly's admission rate is also a lot lower than UC Riverside's and its yield is higher. Also, Cal Poly has some outstanding programs...architecture is one of the best in America and the other programs are up there too.

And Riverside does not have some amazing programs as well? The best etymology department in the nation, the Haider Biomedical program, to name two? What about the creative writing program? It's basically all around strong, sort of like what they say about SLO. I just don't think one is hands down better than the other in general. Many people in california use UCR as a safety, making its admissions rate super high and yield very low. This might be less so with Cal Poly SLO, as many people will simply not apply to Cal States and opt for UCs instead. Yes, the architecture is supposed to be the best in the country, yes, the engineering program is supposed to be very good, as is business, but is SLO hands down better than UCR? I don't think so. Riverside has its equivalent "amazing" and "very good" programs. There are many things that SLO has that UCR does not, but the same is true the other way around.

Thanks for insulting my intelligence.

San Luis Obispo is the ONE exception.

The rest of the Cal States suck.

Some people....

Today, I happened to see a Cal State professor that I know. He has been teaching for 30+ years, and he concurred with my theoretical vs practical assessment. Sure, it may vary for some areas of studies, but I suspect that it becomes a clearer distinction in the upper division courses than in the lower division ones.

ok this is my knowledge from first hand accounts from friends, family.
san luis obispo is ONE THE BEST for engineering.. my friend got a 1470/1600 on the SAT, 4.3 gpa.. accepted to several TOP UC's (LA, etc) and went to san luis obispo for engineering..
FULLERTON AND LONG BEACH have better undergraduate BUSINESS programmes than RIVERSIDE. end of story.

great argument there about business. Are you considering going into law?

Cal Poly SLO is the main exception. I don't even personally consider Cal Poly SLO to be a Cal State like the other schools mentioned in this thread.

im right

and people agree..

i had to be rude bc im sick of people talking out of their behinds.

LOW UC?

HIGH CSU?

whats wrong with you people? a good school is a good school. stop putting labels and making someone who goes to ex. SDSU feel stupid compared to someone who goes to UC Davis. its ignorant to label an entire university system as 'bad' or say that all cal states suck. it all depends on the major and the person.

Right. Because Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Long Beach are much better than UC Irvine or UC Riverside...

San Diego State, purely in my biased opinion, has a better business program then UC Riverside and is one of the few colleges in the country that offers a certification in financial accounting/and or planning.

A few more things you may want to know, before opening up your mouth...

US NEWS rates its business program in the top 60 tied with schools such as Notre Dame.

7th best international business program in the nation

NASDAQ has established it as one of the top 20 entreprenurial universities in the nation. We are the only school that has a student run investment fund.

Recent graduates include the CEO of Costco, Jack in The Box, inventor of flex fit, and many other success stories.

So HeavenWood, please take your ignorance and whoring of prestige and keep it on the east coast. Thanks.

Although, most people on the east coast, have no idea about some of the great programs CSU's offer, so for example if you're not going to a top 25 school (where it's prestigious everywhere) I would recommend going to a school that has good community ties to where you want to work, that is all.

how about go to a CC and transfer...

THANK YOU. savedbythebell actually uses his/her brain and thinks beyond what he/she hears. if only everyone on this website did that. I too, am sick of people saying "CSUs SUCK"....there are 23 campuses and thousands of students state-wide getting their education there...please be quiet on the subject bc by talking on what you hear, your only spreading ignorance.
