Hi, I am a Senior in H.S. with 3.68 GPA (california resident) and average SAT (1090 but will give tests again). Have voluneteer hours and am working part-time at local library. Also was on a 2 week summer engr. camp at NCSU.
I am interested in engineering going on to MBA later. Considering UC Santa Cruz, Cal Poly etc. Heard CSU are better for jobs than UCs? appreciate opinions.

Also what is the best chance for getting into UC - go undeclared major?

UC's are better than CSU's. It might be that CSU's, you can take more courses that directly apply to a career, but think of this as more "vocational" training.

When it comes down to it, though, UC's are better schools, with better professors, better students, and ultimately a more valuable degree (in most cases)

I would agree except for Cal Poly - SLO. It easily competes against UCs and employers certainly have responded to Cal Poly graduates in a positive way.

Thanks for all your replies. It confirms pretty much what I had come up with, Looks like SLO is a great CSU for jobs. My dad worked at HP and he talked about how HP hires from Cal Poly.

I am also considering UCSC and UCI only because they are within range. UCD may be a stretch. I did take a fair amount of AP classes per UC/CSU course list in H.S. I want to go on to a MBA later on , not interested in research. UCI seems to have a minor program in Business - will that help towards a MBA or any engineering would do.

Thanks Mr. Payne for the info. What is the best option for me to get to SLO - given that I am a borderline case. I also heard Engineering is very tough to get into. Can I opt for a 'easier' major and then try to transfer after I get in?

What you are talking about is very rare, I'm not sure I know anyone who has even transferred into the college of engineering from another college.

I am trying to find out what are my best chances to get into Cal Poly, SLO. Specify 'undeclared' as my major or 'undeclared' in engineering? Also I hear that CSU Chico has excellent job placements with their Engineering and Business colleges. any opinions on these?

Could Chico be a better alternate to Engineering than a expensive private school such as UOP.

rolo, it is an old game at SLO to find the easy major, gain admit, and then try to slide over. not so easy anymore. not impossible, but no certainties. you are taking a risk.

xtx, cal poly pomona has comparable engineering programs to its northern sister school. very similar curriculum and faculty, with lots of ivy league and big ten type terminal degrees. a tad lower in ranking but still solid. you also might want to peek at san jose state which also is strong in engineering.

it is common knowledge that the best cal states are better in engineering for undergrads than the lowest UCs. this is not so true in the humanities and social sciences, however, nor is it true at the grad level where the UC campuses rule.

Personally, UCR, UCSC are jokes in the sciences and engineering. I had a girl who once though so highly of UCR biology program that I almost snorted my drink through my nose.

SLO is about on par with UCSB, UCI, UCD in engineering but still lags behind the UC's big 3 (SD, LA, Berkeley)

SLO also has more attractive girls than UCR and UCSC if that also sways your decision as well.
