Hi,
My name is Jessica and I am a current student at a local CC in the San Diego area. I have a 3.82 cumulative GPA and a 4.0 GPA in my major Science courses (Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Microbiology). I also have fulfilled the Language Other Than English Requirements(LOTER) and have been a volunteer at the UC San Diego Medical Center for over two years. CSUSM is my first choice, but I am extremely nervous that I will not be accepted into the program because I am outside of the Local Admission Area . I am the first in my family to attend any kind of university so you could just imagine how nervous I’m feeling (especially since applications begin Oct.1 of this year). If there are any current CSUSM transfer (or non-transfer) students (preferably within The School of Nursing) with any advice for my upcoming applications in the Fall I would GREATLY APPRECIATE IT.
Thank you.
Nursing admissions in CA are nuts - super competitive and often have nuanced admission requirements. Since you are local, I’d encourage you to go to the campus and meet with an admission advisor and some people in the Nursing office, ask them for guidance about how you can set your application apart. While you are there, see if you can sit in on a class or two, then hijack a couple of current students - offer them a coffee and pick their brains. Trust me, people will help.
I’d also encourage you to apply to San Bernardino, Channel Islands, Sac and other less competitive CSUs with a program - as noted above, it is crazy competitive, you need to apply broadly.
Good luck
Applying to CSU San Marcos with a 3.82? and a 4.0? You should get into that school easily. There is a joke among students as to CSU So Mercenary… They are basically a degree pumping institution with the CSU name. Former student here and glad to have transferred out of there. If you are coming from a CC I would HIGHLY recommend to apply to a UC. I know that you already applied but honestly, you don’t want to go there. I had two friends who wanted to do nursing switch out of the major. I think they are doing education now? Anyways, CSUSM has a 67% (2015) acceptance rate. It is basically a repeat of community college, just MORE expensive and not enough classes…
Late reply, but curious - your friends that wanted to do nursing “switch out of the major”, did they switch from nursing because they could not get into the program?
