I agree with those upthread about Rhodes, though it’s admittedly more preppy than quirky. (That said, there’s definitely quirky, nerdy kids around.) It has long been excellent in the sciences and is improving its already very respectable facilities.
Rhodes College took another step this week to improve and expand its science facilities, pulling a construction permit to build a $30 million science building called Robertson Hall.
The 55,000-square foot stone building will rise on the interior of the 100-acre campus and help form another quadrangle, or courtyard, in keeping with campus’s collegiate Gothic theme. Construction starts after spring semester classes end, and should be completed in summer 2017.
Robertson Hall will be three levels of chemistry and biology teaching labs, classrooms, research labs, offices and lab-support spaces, said Rhodes spokesman Ken Woodmansee. The buildings will connect on the lower level with the Frazier Jelk Science Center.
Robertson Hall is part of a multiyear, $55 million expansion of the college’s science facilities.
“Our sciences expansion plans were broken down into two phases in order to provide time to raise funds, design, and implement new construction and renovation efforts,” Woodmansee said in a prepared statement.
The first phase involved the renovation of all six floors of Rhodes Tower, totaling about 40,000 square feet. That project entailed new physics labs, departmental offices, research labs, an astronomy lab and telescope, neuroscience lab and facilities, environmental biology lab, and biology faculty research labs.
The second phase, in addition to Robertson Hall, will include converting and renovating the Briggs Student Life Center for a 22,000-square-foot academic building. The converted building primarily will be used for computer science.
I would check out Lewis & Clark if you visit Reed. Allegheny and Colorado College are certainly worth a look. Possibly Macalester as well.
