Hey, I'm an OOS student attending UNC next year. I'm trying to decide which CTOPS orientation session to attend. Do many OOS students do the August session (the "make-up" session) so they don't have to travel to campus twice? Is it better to go earlier in the summer since you choose classes while there?

Thanks.

im going to UNC too! haha just saying. im going in one in july so i will have my AP scores by then and can get exempt from some classes

Hm.. never really thought of this. I would guess the earliest one after getting AP scores would be smartest to go to.

The way CTOPS works is a certain number of slots for each class are reserved for the different CTOPS sessions.

As for the OOS aspect of it all, I actually went to the first session, and I met plenty of OOS students there. I'm am an OOS, but I don't think it really matters which one you go to. Going after you get your AP scores can definitely help though. I ended up signing up for a class that I already had credit for and dropping it about a month in. Then again, I probably would have dropped it anyway because of my physics class. :P

The August CTOPS is not only a "make up" session, but also a session for international students who cannot enter the U.S. few weeks before the school starts. Attending the August CTOPS can be something good or bad because the earlier you go there are more choice in terms of class availability (even though there are specified number of spaces in each CTOPS session, it is likely that you will not get the classes you want if you attend August CTOPS) but if you attend an earlier CTOPS than the release of AP scores, then you might not know what classes that you are placed out. The former, class availability, however, is not that big of a problem because if it is a large class, you can easily "sit-in" in the first few weeks of the class or there are people who drop out. So if you really don't want to travel to NC twice, it probably is a good idea to attend the August CTOPS. You will meet more international students in CTOPS on August than in any other session.

It should be noted that if you have or will have a lot of AP credit you will have issues at later CTOPs getting classes since they only have spots in the lower level classes

*spots reserved that is

what egghead said is true, but keep in mind that a lot of different spots open up over the first few days of classes.

This is true as well. If you have a late CTOPs what packerfan said is your best bet
