Since we are from out of state and driving to Carolina takes the better part of a day, we will quite possibly attend the last CTOPS. I have seen a rumor on this board that kids who go to the last CTOPS will have a terrible time getting a decent schedule. The school theoretically holds slots in classes for students from all CTOPS sessions, but how does this really work?? If we go in August will DD get all 8 o'clock classes?? Will all the good freshman seminars be full?? I would love to hear about other people's evperiences with the final CTOPS. I belive that DD will place out of many freshman classes, and I don't know if that should affect our decision. Thank you for any information you can share.

yep its true. However, there is always drop add right after that and that is when they seem to get them ironed out. The truth is that some classes are very hard to get even for juniors who register earlier. WE are from out of state and my second child is starting carolina. We are driving in (6+ hours the night before and then staying for two nights departing after last session for late night drive home) There is very cheap transportation from airport via nice bus system
$2. Hotels within walking distance to everything, unc, town etc. if you all want to come for ctops earlier. We did pick a much earlier session for D2 for the registration reason.

Hey I just saw you are from Atlanta.....I am going to session 4. PM me your contact info if you want and we can stay in touch. My daughter is also going to do the APPLES service learning program hopefully right before school starts in August.

She should not have a "terrible" time getting a decent schedule but she may have a few classes that she will have to take on the "off" semester. This isn't altogether a bad thing since off semester classes tend to be smaller in core requirement classes. If she will test out of many freshman classes either through AP or other testing the only issue could be in foreign language classes should she choose to take one. In the past four years that seems to be the most common complaint; the availablilty of foreign languages for later registration dates. S's roommate freshman year went to the last CTOPS and had 40 hrs AP credit as well. He had some problem with registering for an upper division poli sci class because it was already full of juniors and seniors which would have been a problem at any time he registered. They will hold spaces in freshman seminars for late registration as well.

when do we get that thing in the mail...the thing with all the courses in it? lol and when do we get an advisor? i have a slight problem cuz i put lingusitics as my intended major, but i really now wanna do business and international studies double major and a language minor. do i call and tell them to change cuz i dont wanna get stuck with a linguistics advisor who has no idea about business!!

everyone at carolina goes into the general college for core courses....and will be advised by the arts and sciences general college initially....you can call admissions and ask how to change but, it probably won't matter alot at this point. good luck.

the bulletin is online.

oh thanks. do they mail it to us at any point though?

Make sure you research courses and requirements pretty thoroughly before you go to CTOPS, there's basically no advising there at all. Even once you start school, advising at UNC is a major problem. Very few students are satisfied with it.

I think I printed it out last time from a pdf file and they got one at the CTOPS. Good idea to figure out your exemptions ahead of time, seminars you are interested in and courses you hope to get. 1st choice, second and on and on.

When I begin university as a freshman, what core requirements do I have to fulfill? I applied to the school as a journalism major, but I want to change to a communications studies major. When do I actually declare my major, and is it for sure that I've been accepted into journalism school already, or do I have to apply directly into the school later on?

bym_iwtl: most of your questions can be answered if you will look at the information at http://advising.unc.edu/newstudents.

All students fulfill their general college core requirements and then must be admitted into high demand colleges at the end of their soph year so.....at this point you do need to know prerequisites of your intended area but as a fresh, there are many basics you will need .

Check the link above as well as the intended major prereq.

Thanks for that site, it's very useful.

So, when I applied to UNC and I listed "journalism" as my intended major, that meant nothing? I will have to apply in my sophomore year? What if I don't get in?!

unfortunately, that really meant very little except for statistical purposes

It is impt to have some direction because each major dept has prereqs. SOO if you want journalism look into their preq. I am sure you will do fine and get in.
