Hope some people can help with CTOPS info. We are OOS and would like to attend in August before move-in day. At Explore Carolina, they stated they would keep spots open in all classes for those attending late. My son will place out of many classes because of the AP results. By doing the last CTOPS session, we will know the AP results and will save an extra plane trip down. However, we don't want him to be closed out of all the classes he wishes to take. Is it better to go to an earlier session? Will they let him register for advanced classes without the results of the AP exams? Anyone have experience with this from last year?

Also, the course schedule for next year on the web does not offer a full description of the classes. Anyone know where we can obtain a copy of the full course directory?

UNC keeps spaces available so that there will not be a disadvantage to attending a latter CTOPS. This does not mean, however, that you son will necessarily get every class he wants, as the available spots may go quickly in the more popular classes. I do not know if places are kept open in other than introductory level classes; you might want to ask about that. The best advice I can give your son is to do some advance work and have a plan with several prioritized options. While he might not always get his first choice, with planning he should be able to come up with a schedule he likes. UNC has enough classes he should be able to find something he is interested in. Also, keep in mind the drop-add period, as spaces in a lot of classes become available.

There is a freshman guide with class descriptions for general college classes. They also are given a paper verson one time of the directory of classes with descriptions....i am sure they are on the registrar's site somewhere.
He will still need to do drop add to get the classes he wants. He gets to move in early if coming to the last ctops session which will also afford you time to get him settled in if you are coming. There are many general college requirements and pre-req for majors he can work on....also he has the oppty to take freshman seminars which are usually very interesting topics. he will have his AP by August so you won't have problems. Both of my D did the earlier sessions so they could do freshman camp (can't do both because they are at same time as last sesson of ctops). Up to you/him and whether you want to make the trip twice.

and then click on the department through which the course is offered. Scroll down (sometimes quite a ways) on the department page and you’ll find course descriptions. It's a bit of a pain, but I've never found them all in one spot -- only department by department.

My OOS daughter did the August CTOPS, had a lot of AP credits, and she was fine with getting good courses. She initially didn't get one that she wanted, but she was online the moment drop-add started (7:00 or 8:00 a.m.!) and added that course and got a better time for another course. She did this at the hotel, in the business center, and there were other UNC OOS August CTOPS kids doing the same thing!

She liked being able to move in early and get settled. We had plenty of time to do the Target and BedBath trips. It worked well.
