For the rising freshmen who have already attended CTOPS, how was the schedule? What was your favorite/least favorite activity? Any advice for the rest of us who will be attending this summer? Thanks!

I attended the first session of CTOPS, one week ago, and the schedule followed pretty closely to the schedule on the CTOPS website. My least favorite activities were the info sessions because there were so many of them right after one another. If you aren’t interested in the subject or already know about it, I don’t recommend going to that particular info session. I spent the time meeting new people, exploring campus, etc. and had a really good time. The “Heel World” performance put on by the orientation leaders on the first evening was really cute, and CTOPS After Dark was a good opportunity to meet and talk to people. Registration on the second day was a bit nerve-wracking because everyone is rushing to get into the classes they want and the seminars fill up in literally less than a minute. Make sure you bring math placement proof, not just a print-out of your score, or you will absolutely not be able to sign up for Chem 101 (many people I met needed it and couldn’t sign up for it because their Math Sat II scores hadn’t come in the mail yet). Good luck, and I hope you have a good experience! :)

My daughter will be using some of her SAT and SATII scores for placement. They were already sent to UNC as part of her application for admission. Does anybody know if those scores will be available at UNC at her registration “appointment”, or does she have to bring an original grade report? Same question applies for AP scores - since they’re being sent to the school, will the school already have the scores at registration, or does she have to bring original score reports?

They already had our SAT scores and AP scores from a while back in our personal record (which the advisors bring to the appointment). As long as nothing was taken as recently as May, such as the SAT II, you shouldn’t have to bring paper copies. Many people in my orientation group took the Math SAT II in May and since they didn’t receive their paper copies in the mail yet, they weren’t allowed to sign up for Chem 101 since they didn’t have math placement proof (you have to place out of Math 110 to take Chem 101).

My advice is don’t waste your time going to all of the scheduled activities. Run off with a group of friends and explore the campus and franklin street instead. You’ll be glad you did. I didn’t go to half the **** and I didn’t miss out.

I agree with pkp20! I’d recommend going only to the info sessions you are really interested in, but the others just get boring after a while if you already know about the topic. Exploring campus on the second day with some new friends was probably my favorite part of CTOPS!

Also thinking back to my orientation a year ago I don’t remember any counselers sitting with me while I registered. They talked about classes I listed as wanting to take but had no input when I actually selected classes. Nothing should be locked out so you can sign up for Chem 101 whether the advisors tell you to or not.

how do they handle students with AP scores that haven’t come in yet? I expect to place out of Chem 101/101L and Calc 101/102…will they let me register for chem 102 and multi-variable calc? Scores come in early July and my orientation is in late June =/

I’m sure they would let you sign-up for CALC 103… if it and CALC 101/102 actually existed.

yeah they’ll let you register for it. just don’t write it down on your planning sheet that you give to the advisor. you are going to register on the internet by yourself and you just search any class and add it. I would only sign up if you are confident that you will be placing out because if you end up not placing out you will have to look for new classes to sign up for once drop/add opens up in august and all the good classes are already gone.

So I can just bring along a paper copy of my AP scores from past years and get credit for it? I really dont feel like paying to send them if I dont have to. Getting to Orientation is already costing my family a hefty sum

for credit i’m pretty sure you have to get them sent.
